Friends,
When I’m back home in San Diego, I get the same questions a lot. What are Democrats doing to push back against Trump? What can I do as an individual to push back? Is there any good news on the horizon?
I’m going to try to answer those questions for you every week. So, here are 3 of each!
3 things I did this week to push back against Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and House Republicans:
1. I introduced the Delete DOGE Act to defund DOGE and stop Elon Musk from stealing from the American people to line his own pockets. DOGE has slashed essential government services and fired tens of thousands of federal workers who perform vitally important jobs to keep Americans safe every day. It’s time for that to stop.
2. Congressman Juan Vargas and I hosted a “Know Your Rights” training for anyone concerned about interactions with federal law enforcement. After an ICE raid in El Cajon and so many horrifying stories about the Trump Administration’s disregard for due process, we were glad to be able to provide important information to our constituents about how to exercise their constitutional rights (which are granted to anyone in the U.S., regardless of their immigration status).
3. I questioned the Commander of NORTHCOM (the U.S. Northern Command) and NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) during a House Armed Services Committee oversight hearing , affirming their commitment to uphold the law and ensure that no military personnel are involved in the arrest or detention of migrants.
(I know I said 3 things, but it was a busy week.)
4. Senator Tammy Duckworth and I introduced the IVF for Military Families Act , a bill that would require TRICARE to cover infertility diagnosis and treatment (including IVF). Members of Congress have access to health care plans that cover these important reproductive services, and it’s time we ensure the same is available for our service members and their families. Donald Trump says he’s the “father of fertility,” so we’re calling him out: support this bill or stop lying to the American people.
5. Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna, Congresswoman Brittany Pettersen, and I took on Speaker Mike Johnson – and won. Reps. Luna, Pettersen, and I are working together on a bipartisan effort to allow Members of Congress who are new parents to proxy vote for the first 12 weeks after they give birth. Speaker Johnson tried to kill our effort with a shady procedural play (essentially tying the passage of key pieces of the Trump agenda to the failure of our effort), and he lost. Nine Republicans bucked their party leadership and voted with us. Speaker Johnson threw a fit and cancelled votes for the rest of the week, halting further progress on their dangerous agenda.
3 things you can do to fight back and make a difference in your community:
1. Attend the Hands Off! National Day of Action on Saturday (April 5) : People from across the country are coming together for a mass mobilization event to call out Trump and Musk’s illegal billionaire power grab. There will be a big march in Washington, D.C. and other rallies held in cities across the country. [[link removed]] I’ll be marching in San Diego’s rally at noon (meet at Civic Center Plaza at 1200 Third Avenue) – I hope to see you there!
2. Call Republican Members of Congress to sign onto H.R. 2557, the IVF for Military Families Act : Republicans repeatedly said throughout the last election cycle that they supported IVF and fertility services for families who need it. Now, we’ve introduced a bill to secure those services for military families – but no Republicans have signed on. You can call the U.S. House switchboard at (202) 224-3121 to speak to Republican Members of Congress and demand that they join the bill.
3. Get trained on how to build pro-democracy power : Women’s March and Public Citizen are hosting an 8-week training series on how you can organize within your community against the threats from the Trump Administration. The first two trainings have already happened, but you can join for one or all six of the remaining sessions. [[link removed]]
3 pieces of good news:
1. Senator Cory Booker held the Senate floor for 25 hours and 5 minutes , halting the harmful work of the Republican majority for a full day and defeating the 68-year-old record of segregationist Senator Strom Thurmond. Senator Booker, who had to speak and remain standing for the duration of the 25 hours, passionately preached about his love for America and urged us all to get into “good trouble” as we stand against Trump’s agenda.
2. A U.S. appeals court denied the Trump Administration’s request to overturn a previous ruling blocking Trump’s ban on trans service members in the military (yes, that’s a quadruple negative) . After the ruling, the Navy sent out a notice that all voluntary and involuntary separations for trans service members are paused — a major victory and an important step in upholding the dignity and rights of the trans community and keeping trained and qualified folks in our military.
3. The Inspector General of the Department of Defense is opening an investigation into Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth after he used Signal, a commercial messaging platform, to share highly sensitive, classified information about imminent U.S. military strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen. Secretary Hegseth showed a reckless disregard for the safety of our service members involved in the strikes, and this investigation is a really important step in holding him accountable (and hopefully showing him the door).
I hope this was helpful (and even a little bit uplifting). Let me know if you enjoyed reading it — and if there’s anything else you’d like to hear about next week.
Warmly,
Sara
