Something has changed.
Trump came into office with the wind at his back. He was feared by his opponents and loved by his base.
He issued executive orders that read like fiery press releases. While largely ignoring Congress, he managed to get some of the most unqualified nominees in American history confirmed.
But I started to sense a change a few weeks ago. While Trump was still issuing executive orders, he was losing badly in court. Fewer and fewer career lawyers at the Department of Justice were willing to even sign their names to defend his actions. Judges were becoming visibly frustrated.
Elon Musk, initially portrayed as a genius cost-cutter, began to look haggard, unhinged and, at times, strung out. His wealth, which once made him appear impressive, now makes him look pathetic.
Then last week came Signal-gate — which began as an example of incompetent sloppiness and quickly devolved into unbelievably incompetent lying. Rather than appearing strong, Trump looked weak: unable to control Musk, unable to fire those who embarrassed him and unable to defend his policies in court.
This week, that perception hardened…
