This week the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau (CFPB), an agency founded by Senator Elizabeth Warren to confront the predatory financial activity that led us into the housing crash of 2009, walked back on its mission. Project 2025 co-author and Acting CFPB Director Russell Vought vacated an enforcement action against Townstone Financial over the lender’s flagrant racism. [Read more ([link removed] ) ]

The 2024 mortgage market was marked by continued uncertainty. Interest rates and home prices remained high and investor activity raised new concerns. For first-time buyers, the post-pandemic housing landscape remained difficult to navigate. Nonetheless, we continue to see signs of expanded access to mortgage credit for Black, Hispanic and Asian groups – communities that have long been excluded from homeownership. Where Do Black Americans Go From Here?

Last year, the McKinsey Institute for Black Economic Mobility released a report that says at the current pace of change, it could take decades to improve outcomes for Black Americans and more than three centuries to get to full equality. Another report by the Institute for Policy Studies and the National Community Reinvestment Coalition suggests that at the current rate of progress, it will take more than 500 years for Black people to reach economic parity.
