Hello Neighbors,

I hope you made it out of this week's snowstorm with optimism that spring weather will return soon and stay. That was hopefully the last snowstorm of the season, as temps should start crawling up into the 50s and 60s by next week. The promise of better weather has reminded me that we will be able fish again in just short 5 weeks, and chatter around the Capitol about the fishing opener is only increasing the excitement. It was a busy week here, and I have several updates to share, so I will get right into it. Thank you for reading!

As we reach several important committee deadlines this Friday and next, much of our work and focus in the legislature is shifting toward crafting this session's budget. One of the most significant and impactful areas of the budget is education, which plays a crucial role in shaping the future of our students, teachers, and schools. Ensuring that our education system is properly funded and supported remains a top priority. Each chamber, including the House and Senate, as well as Governor Walz, has put forward their own proposed budget for this biennium. However, it is important to note that House Republicans are the only group that did not propose cuts to education. At a time when many school districts are already struggling due to unfunded mandates and financial strain, we believe that reducing funding for education would only make matters worse. Our goal is to prioritize students, teachers, and staff by ensuring that resources remain in place to provide quality education and maintain the stability of our schools. As budget discussions continue, we will keep fighting for a responsible plan that supports Minnesota’s education system without unnecessary cuts that hurt students and educators.

Aside from the upcoming budget negotiations, I have been focused on supporting and strengthening many local community organizations. From promoting the fishing museum in Little Falls to working on legislation that will benefit our schools and advocating for a sales tax exemption in Aitkin, I am committed to doing everything I can to improve our region. While much of the work at the Capitol revolves around state-level issues, I understand that the most important concerns are the ones that directly impact our local communities. I am proud to represent our area and take great pride in the work I do to support local businesses, schools, activities, and residents. Connecting with the people I serve and working on issues that matter to them is one of the most rewarding aspects of my job.

Moving into next week, we are facing the third committee deadlines next Friday. Once that deadline passes we will be almost exclusively focused on putting together our budget. I will update you on that process as I am able to. In our district, I want to shoutout Aitkin Public Schools and their musical production of Footloose [ [link removed] ] this weekend. They have shows tonight, tomorrow, and Sunday and you can buy tickets here [ [link removed] ] to support our high school theatre students.

BTW: By the way, we only have a few weeks left of Lent, and I encourage you to enjoy the fish fry's while you can! One local option is The Joint - Tavern and Eatery in Aitkin.
