What two new confirmations mean for democracy
* The U.S. Senate is set to confirm ([link removed]) Harmeet Dhillon, a veteran lawyer with a history of attacking voting rights, to lead the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Civil Rights Division. The division is the federal government’s chief enforcer of voting rights, bringing cases under the Voting Rights Act and other protections against racial discrimination in voting. Now it will be run by someone with a record of working to restrict, rather than preserve, access to the ballot.
* Just in the past few years, Dhillon’s namesake firm has been involved ([link removed]) in more than a dozen election and voting-related lawsuits across seven states and Washington, D.C., according to Democracy Docket’s litigation tracker. These lawsuits challenged everything from voting rights laws that make it easier for more people to vote, fair representation redistricting efforts, post-voting procedures and President Donald Trump’s disqualification from appearing on several states’ ballots in 2024.
* The Senate also confirmed Dean Sauer as the next U.S. Solicitor General, the fourth highest-ranking office in the DOJ. Sauer previously represented Trump in his Supreme Court immunity case and supported Texas' effort to decertify the 2020 election.
Former pardon attorney: Trump’s damage to DOJ will be ‘generational’
* Liz Oyer, the former pardon attorney for the DOJ, was among several high-ranking and longtime DOJ officials fired or demoted by the Trump administration as part of Trump’s dangerous effort to undermine the traditional separation between the White House and the department.
* In today’s interview ([link removed]) with Democracy Docket, Oyer discussed how Trump’s “multi-pronged assault” on the department, major law firms and the judiciary undermines central tenets of the U.S. justice system.
Trump’s most dangerous power grab
* Trump has signed over 100 executive orders since retaking office. Some are little more than hate-filled press releases, while many have caused unnecessary pain and hardship. But the most dangerous one is an unlawful power grab aimed at our elections, Marc writes ([link removed]) in a new piece.
