Friend,
Two days ago, Sen. Cory Booker made a record-breaking 25-hour speech – where he held the Senate floor to not only block Trump’s agenda in Congress but also expose Trump and his allies for the sheer destruction they are inflicting on the American people. Sen. Booker’s action was emblematic of what’s become an all-too-common phrase in public life: standing up and speaking truth to power.
I had the honor of bearing witness to Sen. Booker’s physical and moral stamina and allowing the Senator from New Jersey a small respite by asking him a question I hear often from my constituents in Connecticut: What can we do?
The answer was simple: Do something.
That’s precisely what Sen. Booker’s 25-hour speech was all about. Doing something, fighting back, sounding the alarm. Because complacency is not an option. Not when the American people are contending with so many real-life problems. Together, each of us has a responsibility to do something, no matter how big or small. No matter if it’s in the halls of Congress or in your community or at the ballot box. If everyone of us truly does something, it will make the difference.
Because while Sen. Booker’s speech is the kindling of a flame, our work does not end there. In addition to supporting Sen. Booker’s speech, on the same day I was proud to join Sen. Ruben Gallego in a commitment to block the Trump administration’s VA nominees. We will do so by objecting to unanimous consent to the nominations to the Department of Veterans Affairs until we have answers and accountability from the Trump administration about their drastic and harmful cuts to VA funding and firing of thousands of VA employees.
As Sen. Booker told me, we must get creative, use every tool possible and hold the Trump administration accountable. I remain committed to standing up for each and every American, from our veterans to those reliant on Medicaid or Social Security and everyone who believes in a fair and just society.
Together, we must leave the United States of America better than we found it. I’m proud to have you with me in this fight.
Thank you,
Dick
