Too many wealthy corporations see penalties for breaking the law as the cost of doing business. Our Attorney General is working to fix that.
America is in a “New Gilded Age.” Greedy billionaires and large corporations are once again colluding to overpower our democracy, exploit workers, and fix prices to hurt consumers.
Over 100 years ago, during the first Gilded Age, Californians put a stop to monopolies’ and cartels’ intolerable practices by passing antitrust laws like the Cartwright Act, which outlawed anti-competitive practices that restrict trade, prevent competition, or fix prices.
But today, California is the fifth largest economy in the world, and home to some of the world’s wealthiest companies. Far too many are all too content to violate our antitrust laws, simply seeing financial penalties as the cost of doing business.
That’s why Attorney General Rob Bonta and State Senator Melissa Hurtado (D-Bakersfield) introduced Senate Bill 763. Their legislation would sharpen the teeth of our existing state laws by dramatically increasing penalties when corporations illegally profit at the cost of workers, consumers, and honest businesses.
