REPORT: White Supremacist Propaganda Focused on Jews and Immigrants in 2024

A new report by the ADL Center on Extremism reveals the scope and common themes behind the thousands of white supremacist propaganda incidents across the country last year. Most of the white supremacist propaganda distributed included antisemitic or anti-immigrant language, and some groups managed to make both vitriolic claims at once. Themes related to Israel and Zionists also remained popular in white supremacist propaganda, but not as extensively as was the case in the months shortly following the 10/7 Hamas terrorist attack.

White supremacist groups use these propaganda campaigns to provoke media and online attention, recruit new members and intimidate and harass Jews, immigrants and other marginalized groups. As Oren Segal, ADL Senior Vice President for Counter-Extremism and Intelligence explained, “Hateful propaganda allows small groups of extremists to spread fear and distrust throughout entire communities.”

Support in St. Louis: When the Affton School District (St. Louis) was vandalized with antisemitic and extremist graffiti last month, one of their first calls was to ADL. We have a longstanding relationship with the school district and were able to connect school district officials with law enforcement, provide critical resources for incident response with families and to serve as a credible narrator with the media about the district’s commitment to fighting hate and antisemitism. We also provided community support, including an ADL-led community event. The St. Louis County Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the incidents.

Superintendent Dr. Travis Bracht noted ADL’s important work in his comments to the media: “Hate has no home in Affton. This incident does not define us — our response does. We will continue working with the ADL, the St. Louis Holocaust Museum and other community partners to provide support, resources and learning opportunities for students and staff.”

What’s Motivating Anti-Zionism Academic Group?: The Institute for the Critical Study of Zionism is an organization seeking to dismantle Zionism. In an explainer from the ADL Center on Extremism, we show how the group engages in inflammatory rhetoric and promotes conspiratorial antisemitic and anti-Zionist claims as they seek the villainization and wholesale rejection of Zionism from academia.

Fighting Antisemitism in the Workplace: In a column hosted by ADL affiliate JLens, Steven Phillips talks about the critical role that Jewish Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) can play in supporting Jewish employees, and how both antisemitism in the workplace and anti-Zionism in the workplace can make Jews feel excluded and uncomfortable at work. It comes as no surprise, particularly in a post-10/7 world, that a lack of understanding can lead to a hostile workplace. Jewish ERGs can take this on, providing spaces where Jews can enjoy being Jewish at work while educating their colleagues.

Urge the White House to Protect the Nonprofit Security Grant Program. Across the country, our synagogues, schools and community centers face threats. Faith-based institutions rely on the federal Nonprofit Security Grant Program to help by funding alarms, guards and even bulletproof windows. We must preserve this funding so that faith-based institutions can be safe.

We must fight antisemitism on campus and protect civil liberties. We can hold perpetrators of antisemitism accountable while maintaining our commitment to the Constitution. ADL CEO @jgreenblattadl wrote about this at length.

Banning Zionists from an LGBTQ+ march is beyond shameful. The majority of Jews consider Zionism to be an integral part of their Jewish identity, so organizers of this event are forcing many who identify both as Jewish and LGBTQ+ to not only hide, but also flat out denounce a part of themselves. In their latest statement, the NYC Dyke March Committee essentially equates Zionism with racism — a falsehood that is regularly used by anti-Israel activists to demonize Israel and exclude Zionists from social justice circles. Newsflash: You cannot exclude the majority of Jews and call yourself inclusive.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Sandy Springs (GA) Mayor Rusty Paul and the Sandy Springs City Council for their leadership in passing municipal ordinances enhancing public safety and protecting all residents from the tactics used to spread hatred and intimidation. Recognizing an alarming surge in extremist activity, ADL developed common-sense public safety measures to support local governments looking to address the public safety concerns this activity creates, while ensuring that these measures protect enshrined 1st amendment freedoms.
