I started the morning of January 18, 2023 on the docks in Annapolis.
Members of my incoming administration, Black leaders, and Maryland dignitaries were there to hold a wreath laying to remember the history of what was once one of the country’s first and largest slave ports. We then marched from the docks to the State House where I was inaugurated as Maryland’s first Black governor.
Believe it or not, I got a lot of pushback about this. People were not pleased about me shedding light on this part of our history. But it’s important.
Loving your country does not mean lying about its history, diminishing those who have helped build it, or challenging what makes our story so unique in world history in the first place.
That’s why I can’t agree with the Trump Administration’s definition of “making America great again.” Because it is centered on erasing what makes us who we are in the first place.
Just take the administration’s latest orders whitewashing the history told at the Smithsonian museums, specifically the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
We need to focus not on eliminating our history, but on lifting it up and celebrating it. We need to come to a shared understanding that the American mosaic is big, broad, and beautiful.
Remembering where we came from isn’t indoctrination. It’s history. It’s what we should be celebrating, flaws and all, because knowing our history gives us our strength.
Elevate,
Wes
