1) Has Anyone Seen the Free-Trade Republicans?
We thought there were more than four in the US Senate. The good news? Trump derangement is a powerful enough force to cause every Senate Democrat to transform into a free trader.

2) Now Republicans Are Considering Raising Income Tax Rates Too
We've received confirmation that House Republicans are considering raising the highest income tax rate to "pay for" the Trump tax cut and no tax on tips. This is sheer fiscal idiocy and a cardinal fiscal sin.
Conservatives were put on this earth to CUT tax rates, not to RAISE them.
Reagan and Trump both provided concrete evidence that the best way to raise revenues is by flattening income tax rates rather than raising them.

3) Senate Budget Makes All the Trump Tax Cuts Permanent
The Senate is finally in the game on tax cuts, and their amendment to the House-passed budget ([link removed]) goes BIGGER than the House version.
Congratulations to Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Senate Budget Chairman Lindsey Graham, and Senate Finance Chairman Mike Crapo. These are the key changes in the Senate amendment:
Crapo was the driving force behind the current policy baseline, which is the key decision that enables the Senate budget to make all of the tax cuts permanent and also include another $1.5 trillion in new tax cuts. He put out an excellent statement that is music to your HOTLINE editors' ears.

President Trump promptly endorsed the Senate amendment:

4) These Tariffs Aren't "Reciprocal"
We have defended President Trump's reciprocal tariff concept when we thought it meant imposing bilateral tariffs equal to those imposed by our trading partners. That is not what the White House announced yesterday. Instead, they put out a tariff schedule that assumed that every country's trade deficit with the U.S. is the product of trade barriers:
[link removed]
"Tariffs are customized to each country," an anonymous White House official explained ([link removed]) "based on the concept that the trade deficit that we have with any given country is the sum of all the unfair trade practices, the sum of all cheating."
Say what? It would be almost impossible for a smaller and poorer nation not to run a trade surplus with the U.S., considering how massive our consumer market is compared to theirs - so they get hit with the highest "reciprocal" tariffs.
As we have explained before ([link removed]) , our trade deficit is simply the mirror image of our financial surplus.

5) Mrs. Fauci Was Given a Choice
When Trump was pressed on never firing Anthony Fauci in his first term, he pointed out that civil service laws tied his hands. But he seems to have learned a lesson. Earlier this week Christine Grady - Fauci's wife and somehow also, ironically, the NIH's top bioethicist - received notice that if she wanted to continue her employment at HHS she would have to accept reassignment to an Indian Health Service outpost in a remote Alaskan village. No word yet on whether she will accept the offer.
