HIGHLIGHT PIECE OF THE WEEK

Advocates Against Assisted Suicide Speak Boldly in Massachusetts

"This incredible turnout was a compelling force in the opposition against this law which is discriminatory, dangerous, and deadly to the most vulnerable in society. Instead of offering death to those with terminal illnesses, we hope Massachusetts lawmakers choose to provide better healthcare, easier access to services, and strengthen palliative and hospice care for all who could benefit."

END ASSISTED SUICIDE UPDATE

On March 26th, our sister organization, the Institute for Patients' Rights, appeared before the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. Our lawyer, Ernie Galvan, crushed it! C&C took up some of the state’s 15 minutes, trying to intervene, even though they’ve been rejected by the court twice now. The state's presentation seemed weak and ill prepared. Recording of the hearing can be found HERE.

Then, on March 28th, the 9th Circuit issued an order stating that it will wait to make a decision. They believe that the result of another case - Arizona Alliance - may determine case law that would affect the outcome of our own, so they have decided to wait on a decision until Arizona Alliance is decided. It could be six months or more before we know more. Our lawyers will closely follow and report on developments as they become public!

In the meantime, please see the video below summarizing the hearing at the 9th Circuit!

Stay tuned! Let’s OVERTURN assisted suicide in California and beyond together in solidarity!

This is a searing indictment of the Westminster bill as it emerges from committee in the UK. As we have known from the beginning, there are a myriad of issues with introducing assisted suicide law. Safeguards are always pushed toward expansion and more people will be put at risk of deadly harm. The Times Editorial Board shined a light on the major flaws of assisted suicide in this article.

Assisted Suicide Bill Coerces Patients

"Palliative care, and more specifically hospice care for those nearing the end of life, is one of the signal achievements of modern medicine. Both in removing physical pain, and in addressing the complex emotional needs of the terminally ill, it can be transformative. But in jurisdictions with assisted suicide, it begins to hold a more brutal meaning. One Oregon nurse has lamented that “There is an attitude among many of our clients that ‘If I go into hospice, they’re going to kill me because that’s what a hospice does.’”
