As you know, my wife, Carol, prepares a monthly prayer alert. I hope you will share Carol's thoughts with your friends and fellow worshipers. Thank you for taking an interest in her monthly devotion. --Gary

This Prayer Alert is written with a heavy heart weighed down by the news of the day and the current state of our country. The United States is facing challenge after challenge.

The Covid-19 pandemic and the daily details about ventilator production and availability, hospital bed numbers, therapeutics, vaccines, nursing home losses, overall case numbers, testing figures and sites all seem like yesterday's news now. As the virus cases continue their downward trajectory and the recovered cases increase dramatically, there is more optimism about the timing and availability of vaccines.

Even so, the economic fallout continues, and the road back to a robust economy will be a long one. Some aspects of American life may be changed for the long term -- where we live, how we get around in our cities, whether we work remotely or in an office, how we educate our children. . . the list goes on.

All of this has jarred the structure of our lives affecting our families, livelihoods, churches, neighborhoods and finances. Also lurking are ever-present divisive issues ranging from the need for and effectiveness of lock downs of churches, schools, retail establishments, manufacturing, restaurants, pools and summer camps. On top of that are layered social distancing and the mask/no mask divide.

To many people it feels like state leaders have overstepped their bounds in shutting down wide swaths of the economy with no attention to strategic and targeted actions. And then some leaders and their families break the very strict rules they are imposing on us.

Into this volatile mix you add the societal tension sparked by the horrific death of George Floyd. The initial protests quickly turned violent and became an excuse for widespread destruction and looting in many of America's great cities. Police are being targeted, small business destroyed, livelihoods snuffed out and innocent people caught in the crossfire. Mayors and governors seem hesitant to restore order. This is where we find ourselves in early June of the summer of 2020.

Dear Lord, we plead with you to keep your hand upon this nation in the weeks and months ahead. We need your guidance, strength and peace now more than ever before. For over a century and a half when we as a country have found ourselves in similarly challenging times – like world wars, the depression, 9/11 -- the challenge brought us together and fostered a unity of spirit. This feels different.

Lord, guide us to summon the strength and resolve to rebuild an economy that had been the envy of the world. Give us physical stamina, sharp minds and creativity to adjust to this new set of circumstances. Remind us of the importance of our families and close friends from whom we have been physically separated for too long.

In the days, ahead help us to celebrate and affirm those relationships grounded in you and draw strength and unity from them. Give us the opportunities and the drive to effectively challenge political leaders who have shut down our churches and efforts to safely worship together as communities of faith while permitting larger, far more reckless gatherings with no similar restrictions

Real change must acknowledge that you, God, have been shut out of public life and for that we have paid a high price. Real change must acknowledge that society has paid dearly for broken families, absent fathers, subpar schools, the lack of character education and history lessons eager to shine a bright light on America's shortcomings while refusing to celebrate her freedoms, opportunities and individual rights.

We know, dear Lord, that America is not perfect, but as Abraham Lincoln said she is the "last, best hope of earth."

Heavenly Father, as we struggle in these days of violence and virus, economic loss and economic hope for the future, raw emotion and strident views, help us to be your people, personally vulnerable yet rooted in your strength. Help us to be the person you see in us and to whom others can look and say, "I can see Jesus in you."

Stay your hand upon these United States.
