Last week, the Trump administration abruptly pulled funding for a research grant working to protect pregnant women from domestic violence. They categorized it as a “DEI” study.

According to HuffPost, the goal was to design a training program for OB-GYNs, public health researchers, and other clinicians to spot the link between domestic violence and pregnancy. This research could have saved thousands of women’s lives as homicide by an abusive partner is the leading cause of death among pregnant and postpartum women in the U.S., and, according to HuffPost, “perinatal women are more than twice as likely to be murdered than to die from sepsis, hypertensive disorders, or hemorrhage.”

Without even thinking about the consequences, the Trump administration has eliminated funding for this critical study because it used the terms “women,” “female,” and “inequity.”

An estimated 324,000 pregnant women are abused each year by an intimate partner – and that number is likely to increase as more women in abortion ban states are forced to stay pregnant. Since the fall of Roe v. Wade, the National Domestic Violence Hotline has experienced a 2x increase in calls about reproductive coercion.

Women in America are facing a massive backslide of our rights. We know that having more women in government will create the necessary guardrails the Trump administration desperately needs.
