Dear John,
I started as FairVote’s CEO one year ago this week. It has been a consequential
time to join the movement for better elections and for a politics that is
responsive to the American people. I write to share reflections from my first
year with you, and I hope you will share your reflections with me, too, by
replying to this email. And I encourage you to keep reading for updates from the
ranked choice voting movement.
The nation feels divided, with different concepts of democracy that can seem
contentious. But what we think divides us is really a shared sense that our
system isn’t working – and there is a hunger to fix it.
Look at the numbers. A stunning88% of Americansbelieve our political system is
broken. The approval ratings for both parties and Congress remain well
underwater – a sign of our collective frustration with the state of America’s
democracy.
Simply put, we as voters want more choices, and we want our elected leaders to
act in our interest. Meanwhile, 88% of voterssay it is important for candidates
to earn support from a majority of voters to win.
This is ranked choice voting’s moment. FairVote is advancing a proven and viable
reform that addresses these concerns, together with our partners. We know that
ranked choice works, improving representation and voter engagement by empowering
candidates to listen to their voters over narrow partisan interests. TheAmerican
Bar Associationrecently published research that confirms that RCV fosters
consensus-building and more civil campaigns. We know that everywhere RCV is
used, voters like itand find it easy.
After one year of leading FairVote, I have come to understand our challenging
moment as one of immense opportunity. The market demand for a more responsive
and accountable government is real. Ranked choice voting is the reform that can
deliver.
This is a growing movement, and I am delighted to have you involved. FairVote
moves forward this year with confidence and purpose, knowing that more choice
and greater freedom are the most American values of all.
I want to hear from you. Please reach me with your reflections or ideas by
replying to this email.
MORE UPDATES FROM THE RANKED CHOICE VOTING MOVEMENT
Before you go, I wanted to share some exciting news from FairVote and the ranked
choice voting movement.
Yesterday, voters in Skokie, IL voted to adopt ranked choice voting, with58% in
favor. This marks the third consecutive victory for RCV in Chicagoland – where
Evanston and Oak Park voted for RCV in 2022 and 2024, respectively. Chicago
advocates eye a push for RCV in the nation’s third-largest city in the coming
years.
In recent days, FairVote published two resources that we’re excited to share
with you.
The first is acandidate guide, which shares proven strategies used by candidates
to win RCV elections – like talking to more voters to build a majority
coalition, encouraging voters to use their rankings and maximize their impact,
and seeking backup-choice support from voters ranking other candidates first.
Imagine elections that reward candidates who do these things, instead of just
revving up a narrow base!
The second is anendorsements guide, which discusses how organizations can use
RCV to decide whom to endorse in elections.
Together, these guides can help Americans make the most of ranked choice voting
– whether they’re running for office themselves or deciding who to vote for.
Lastly, I hope you’ll read thisNewsweek op-edwritten by two 2024 presidential
nominees in support of RCV.Jill Stein and Chase Oliver – the Green and
Libertarian nominees, respectively – shine light on the “spoiler” problem and
the importance of giving voters more choice with RCV. They write that “having
more states adopt ranked choice voting would be a game changer.”
Thank you for your commitment to better elections and better government for
every American. Withyour support, our movement will continue to scale and win
ranked choice voting across the nation, one jurisdiction at a time.
With thanks,
Meredith Sumpter
