For over the past week, communities in Pickens County and the surrounding area have faced a serious wildfire emergency near Table Rock State Park. As your Representative, I want to keep you updated on how I’ve been working — both on the ground and in Washington — to support our first responders, cut red tape, and make sure our district has what it needs to recover.

Boots On the Ground – Supporting Our First Responders

This week, I was on the ground in Pickens and Greenville Counties to meet with the emergency personnel, fire crews, and volunteers working tirelessly in response to the Table Rock fires. At the command center, I saw firsthand the coordination, dedication, and bravery of teams from across the Upstate and beyond — all united with one mission: keeping our people safe.

I’ve been in close contact with local leaders and Governor Henry McMaster throughout the response efforts. I also joined Rep. William Timmons for an aerial assessment of the impacted areas and received briefings from the command leadership. I’m incredibly grateful for the swift, professional response from those on the front lines, and for the support of neighbors and community members who continue to step up in meaningful ways.

South Carolinians always come together in times of need — and I’ll continue doing everything I can to support local recovery efforts and ensure our communities have what they need to move forward.

Delivering Relief – Cutting Red Tape for Families and Small Businesses

While I was on the ground at Table Rock, one thing was clear: when disaster strikes, government needs to help — not slow things down. That’s why, back in Washington, I voted for two important bills this week to support disaster recovery efforts: the Filing Relief for Natural Disasters Act and the Disaster Related Extension of Deadlines Act.

These bills are focused on making it easier for families and small businesses to get the relief they need, when they need it most. By cutting red tape and speeding up the recovery process, we can help communities rebuild faster and with fewer bureaucratic roadblocks.

When people are dealing with the aftermath of a fire, flood, or hurricane, the last thing they should worry about is navigating complicated government systems. I’ll keep pushing for commonsense solutions that put people first and help our community move forward.

Bringing South Carolina’s Voice to the Homeland Security Committee

I also brought this message directly to Washington in a Homeland Security Committee hearing, where I delivered remarks on how the federal government can do a better job responding to disasters like the Table Rock fires.

South Carolina’s Upstate has now faced two record-setting disasters in just six months, and while our communities are strong and resilient, they deserve the best tools, support, and information available to recover and rebuild.

In my remarks, I pressed emergency officials on ways to cut through red tape, improve communication across agencies, and better use technology like drones in recovery operations.

I’ll keep working to ensure that the voices of South Carolina’s families, first responders, and local leaders are heard loud and clear in Washington.
