Team,
Over the past several days, our country has watched in horror as police officers have used excessive force against nonviolent protesters, attacking them with pepper spray, tear gas, batons, and rubber bullets.
Ilhan refuses to sit idly by as Americans have their constitutional rights trampled on. To stop this human rights violation, she’s introduced legislation to criminalize police violence against protesters. Will you call on Congress to treat this moment with the urgency it requires and pass this bill?
Just weeks ago, white protesters stormed Michigan’s statehouse, wielding weapons to threaten and intimidate lawmakers into prematurely reopening the economy — and faced no violence from police. Yet as activists across the country come together to demand an end to police brutality and the institutions that uphold white supremacy, they are met with aggression and violence from law enforcement. It’s abundantly clear whose rights and lives our society sees as valuable, and whose it does not.
If we pass this bill, we can help end this double standard, and any law enforcement officer who kills or physically harms a civilian while responding to a protest will face federal criminal charges.
Add your name to call on Congress to treat this moment with the urgency it requires and pass this bill.
If we are going to stop our country’s pattern of systemic violence, we must fundamentally transform our criminal justice system — and how we treat those advocating for civil rights. This bill is an important step on the path to justice, so thank you for speaking out and calling on your representatives.
