In the past few weeks, Elon Musk made a big bet in Wisconsin. He poured $25 million in the state Supreme Court race, including two million dollars given directly to two people for voting. He made it a referendum on he and Trump’s billionaire agenda. 

Last night he lost, decisively.

His candidate in the race lost by 10%, in a state Trump just won in 2024. (And, in Florida, Republican Congressional candidates underperformed Trump by double digits.) 

Here's what this tells us:

1. Trump and Elon Musk have been aggressively trying to shut down every aspect of our government that serves everyday people. People are turning against it — and even the richest man in the world spending millions of dollars can’t make it go away
2. This puts Trump’s billionaire bailout bill (which would also decimate climate programs) in peril. Congressional Republicans up for election in 2026 are very scared after last night’s results and will be extra susceptible to pressure.
