From 21 - 23 March, Liberal Democrat Members came together in Harrogate for our Spring Conference.
We celebrated everything we’ve achieved since the election and looked ahead to what we can and must achieve in the future.
Our conferences are a great opportunity for us to decide on our strategy going forward and pass important policies, as well as a chance for us to come together from across the country and have an excellent weekend!
Below are some of the highlights from our Spring Conference - we hope you’ll be inspired to become a Member so that you can join us at our next Conference in the Autumn! | | Already a Member? Ed called for us to step up and champion our liberal, internationalist values, proving that we are the antidote to their destructive nationalism.
Ed also celebrated our trademark community politics approach, after Kemi Badenoch tried to mock us by saying that we do good things for our communities rather than being on Twitter…
If that means we’re a party that cares about our community’s concerns and fixes them, we’ll proudly take it! | | | | Get inspired by other keynote speeches | 🔶 Josh Babarinde MP, our Justice Spokesperson, talked about the need to break the cycle of crime through rehabilitation; something he has spent a long career doing. He also highlighted his essential Domestic Abuse Bill to protect victims and ensure they get proper justice.
🔶 Helen Morgan MP, our Health and Social Care Spokesperson, spoke about the urgent need to fix ambulance delays and hospital capacity, which is dangerously normalising corridor care.
🔶 Cllr Mike Ross, Leader of Hull City Council and our candidate for Mayor of Hull and East Yorkshire on 1 May, highlighted the huge difference Lib Dems are making in Hull, outlining our many achievements in the city, firing us up for his campaign and local elections across England. | | | | Learn more about key Lib Dem figures and achievements at the Conference Rally | At Friday night’s opening rally, we celebrated everything we’ve achieved since the election; showing why it’s so important we continue to elect more Liberal Democrats.
We heard from MPs Lisa Smart, Joshua Reynolds, Charlie Maynard, and Josh Babarinde, plus Cllr Hannah Kitching, who talked about their own campaigns and those of the wider party.
Anna Sabine MP also quizzed our newest member of the House of Lords, Lord Mohammed, on his new Parliament colleagues. Why is Clive Jones MP dressed as a Thunderbird? You’ll have to watch the Rally to find out! | | | | Learn more about our policy | Unlike other parties, our Members vote on our policies, meaning that we hold lots of interesting debates at Conference.
This time, we debated and passed the following motions:
🔶 Science, Innovation and Technology: A package of measures to make Britain a science superpower, with a dynamic and innovative science and technology sector that is fair to all in society, not just the big corporations.
🔶 Free To Be Who You Are: LGBTQ+ people continue to face prejudice, discrimination and hostility. We want to build a society where nobody’s life chances are limited or determined by their sexual orientation or gender identity.
🔶 The UK’s Response to Trump: The US is becoming an unreliable and unpredictable partner under Trump. The UK must step up on the world stage, dealing with Trump from a position of strength, and lead in Europe, negotiating a new UK-EU customs union.
🔶 Restoring International Development Assistance: We call for an immediate restoration of spending 0.5% of Gross National Income on Overseas Development Assistance, and a roadmap to spending 0.7%, to support the world’s most vulnerable, aid global climate commitments, and boost our soft power.
🔶 Animal Welfare in the Food System: After the last Conservative Government neglected animal welfare, we’re calling for an Animal Health and Welfare Bill to make the UK a world leader in this area again.
🔶 Ending the Crisis: A Fair Deal for Children with SEND: Many children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) are struggling to get the help they need, with families facing endless battles to get support. We’re fighting for real reform so every child can reach their full potential. | | | Have you been inspired and want to experience Conference in person, John? | Join the Liberal Democrats today! | | If you believe in our liberal, internationalist values, support our policies above, and want to help elect more Liberal Democrats to fight for communities across the country, become a Member today!
