Dear John
A huge thank you to everyone who has donated to the Advance Myanmar Earthquake Appeal, and to those who have been sharing it on social media.
Thanks to you, Advance Myanmar has so far been able to send £30,000 to local civil society organisations and to activists on the ground, who are helping those affected by the earthquake.
Advance Myanmar is prioritising funding going to help people who are not getting help elsewhere, including the areas of Burma where the Burmese military ban the UN and other aid agencies from operating.
Media have been focusing on Mandalay and Naypyidaw, but we are getting reports of lives lost and homes destroyed from across the country, with Sagaing hit really hard. Large areas of Sagaing region have been freed from Burmese military occupation, and the Burmese military block international aid agencies accessing these areas, so supporting local community organisations on the ground is the only way to help.
For the security of those Advance Myanmar is assisting, we can’t provide too many details, but your donations have helped fund support for people in Sagaing, Mandalay, Karen State and Shan State.
Even while people were struggling with the impacts of the earthquake, the Burmese military continued airstrikes, drone strikes, artillery attacks and even used paramotors to drop bombs. Only today have they finally bowed to pressure for a ceasefire. The figures for the death toll they are providing can’t be trusted, with local organisations estimating the death toll to be much higher.
The Burmese military conducted artillery shelling in Karen State earlier today, killing a civilian.
In the worst hit areas water, food and medicines are running short. The temperature in central Burma is hitting almost 40°C. Bodies are rotting under buildings and the risk of disease is high.
If you haven’t donated yet, please do. ([link removed]) If you have, please share the appeal with friends and colleagues. Your donation won’t be a drop in the ocean, it will go to local people on the ground helping their communities, saving lives, assisting people who have lost everything.
