[1]U.S. Senator Chris Murphy

I imagine you’ve heard by now that my friend and colleague Cory Booker just finished a 25-hour filibuster.

It is poetic that he broke the previous record set during the debate of the Civil Rights Act. Cory erased a racist pro-segregation speech from the Senate record books to give a speech that will define our democracy.

I was proud to be his wingman - standing with him on the Senate floor overnight, for all 25 hours.

Cory and I were partners on this because we believe the same thing — that this moment demands extraordinary tactics. He knew he had to break the record to force the public attention this moment requires. These are not normal times, and we cannot play by normal rules. It requires real risks where we rise to the moment.

Cory Booker did that. I’m so proud of him, and he deserves our support right now.

If you’re proud of Cory Booker, please split a donation between his re-election and my fight against the billionaire takeover of our government. It would mean a lot to Cory to know you have his back today.

I was one of the few Cory told earlier this week that he was thinking about doing this. I told him that I would have his back every step of the way, just like he did for me during my 15-hour filibuster. He stood by my side for the entire thing.

Look, neither Cory nor I would claim a filibuster to be a heroic act on its own, but I want to make clear how tough what he just accomplished is. For 25 hours, he remained on the Senate floor behind his desk — not allowed to sit or go to the bathroom. He is going to hurt for days — I can promise you that.

But Cory understands the stakes of this moment. When he took the floor, he announced that he’d talk for as long as he could about Trump’s planned Medicaid cuts and the immorality of gutting Medicaid by $880 billion to fund a tax cut for billionaires. For over a day, he talked about the White House’s corruption, the unconstitutional seizure of power, the threat of an unelected billionaire like Elon Musk, and the clear stakes of this moment.

I was the only person with him in the dead of night, and I stayed with him all day. Now, I’ll admit I sat and took a couple of bathroom breaks, but otherwise, I was there to support my friend the entire time and help him meet the demands of this moment.

We needed to do something exceptional to raise public awareness of the treachery underfoot — the Republican plan to kick millions off their health care to fund a massive tax cut for the wealthy. We need to use whatever rules and power are available to us to put pressure on our colleagues and compel the public into action.

That’s what my friend Cory Booker just did. Throughout his effort, he reminded us that the power in this country comes not from those of us in Washington but from the people. He called all of us to action, and now, it is our turn to return the favor. In the coming weeks and months, we must mobilize and organize to make sure we do not lose our democracy.

But one small yet powerful action you can take right now would be to let Cory know that you have his back and he made you proud.

So please, if you can, split a contribution between Cory Booker’s re-election and my efforts to mobilize an effective opposition across this country. The donation itself is just as important as the amount. It’s a powerful way for you to send a message to all of our colleagues that you are in this fight with us.

Thank you for supporting Cory. It really means a lot to me.

I’ve got to get some rest now, but I’ll be in touch again soon.

Every best wish,

Chris Murphy
