John, I can’t thank you enough
for helping Leaders We Deserve meet our fundraising goal before the
end-of-quarter deadline.
But today, I actually want to talk about something different: Senator Cory
Booker’s impassioned, marathon speech against the Trump-MAGA agenda – one
of the longest in the history of the Senate.
Senator Booker read a story from a woman in Wisconsin who felt that she
was living the American dream with her husband and kids before she was
diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. She pleaded with Senator Booker to
protect the Social Security that she relies on to manage the impacts of
this degenerative disease.
I almost broke down in tears during this part of the speech, just like
Senator Booker did when he thought about his own dad’s struggle with
Parkinson’s.
I thought about how my father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s when I was in
fifth grade. The only reason my family didn’t go bankrupt was because of
the support of Social Security when he couldn’t work anymore. It literally
saved our family along with the VA benefits my father had from being a
Navy pilot. Which Trump is now coming after too.
My dad passed away last September and I still think about him every day.
He was a Navy helicopter pilot and law enforcement officer who spent
decades of his life sacrificing holidays, birthdays, and years of family
time to protect the American people. I believe our country has an
obligation to serve those who serve us.
What’s happening to Social Security right now is wrong. While Trump and
the MAGA GOP threaten to take away these essential benefits, I want to
thank Senator Booker for calling it out, standing up to fight this cruel
agenda, and speaking out for families like my own.
This kind of leadership is powerful – and it’s deeply resonant for
millions of people across the country with stories like mine. Senator
Booker demonstrated exactly how Democrats should be responding: fighting
back hard, in every way possible.
John, thank you
again for helping us reach our goal last quarter. We’re going to keep
electing leaders who are ready to meet this moment with the urgency it
deserves – leaders like Senator Booker, who was just 29 when he was first
elected. That work is possible thanks to the continued support from this
grassroots team.
Thank you for everything you’re doing,
David Hogg
