Gotcha! Happy April Fools Day!
I’m glad you opened this issue of The Social Contract because we’re doing something a little different today.
First, all content is FREE to all subscribers this week as a big THANK YOU for being a part of our community. We are so grateful!
Second, we want to invite you to be a part of our first FOUNDING MEMBER event next Wednesday, April 9, at 8pm ET. Every founding member of The Social Contract is invited!
If you’re already a founder, keep an eye out for our email with more details about this event.
If you’re not a founder yet, please upgrade now [ [link removed] ]. You’ll be helping to support the best resistance community on Substack (in my humble opinion) and our small but mighty staff—regular Americans like you who are fiercely pro-democracy and independent af.
Extra incentive! Two founders will be selected at random next week to share a virtual Happy Hour with Joe and help write the Friday Night Tequila Tweet!
Third, I told you when we started this thing that I want to be an amplifier for the resistance. You’ve sent me some great feedback that I think deserves the spotlight this week. So just a quick video from me today and then onto your commentaries.

Join the growing #NOKINGS community! Let’s build a community right now of Americans who rally around and identify with that basic truth: we don’t have kings in America. We’re figuring out in real time where we go from here. I’ve changed all my profile pictures to #NOKINGS, and you can too. Grab the #NOKINGS graphic below and go to www.oneflaginitiative.org [ [link removed] ] for instructions on how to change your profile pics.
Post this on your social media! We are building the fiery, grassroots resistance to King Donald right here at the Social Contract. We are open to everyone and welcome diverse viewpoints. Please let your network know we’re here!
This is a big one! Go to www.handsoff2025.com [ [link removed] ] to look for a protest happening near you this Saturday, April 5. Other protest opportunities are available here [ [link removed] ].
Can’t protest? Here’s an easy way to show your support that anyone can do!
I would love to have multiple parties, but at this moment, I think we all rally under one flag, the Dems flag.
Just like America is reinvented and reinvigorated by immigration, the Democrats need the energy and ideas of former Republicans and Independents.
What we need to push for, together, is:
1) Jungle primaries
2) Ranked-choice voting
Thanks. —Dean S.
Joe,
I’ve been listening to your podcasts for years—I believe it started after I heard you (as a guest) on the Lincoln Project podcast. Appreciate all you’re doing. I’ve got a lot of opinions and thoughts, but I’ll get to the point as to why I’m emailing you.
Am I the only one who thinks that Trump is destroying our country’s economy so we all come to our knees? In which case, he remains in power? He seems to give less than half-a-fuck that tariffs will destroy our economy. He’s not the brightest bulb on the chandelier, but I think he’s smart enough to know that his tariffs could tank the economy and allow him to remain in power if other methods of remaining in power fail. He wants power, he wants to be king. We all know that any action he takes is only considered in how it will benefit him first. I think tanking the economy (while concurrently keeping his MAGA lemmings in their “hateful” state of mind) almost guarantees long-term autocracy in America.
He’s such a fucking dick. —Jim Newman
Joe,
I’m an 82-year-old widow completely dependent on my Social Security. Scary to think it might be messed with!!
Thanks for speaking out and shaking a few cages. —Jan Aszman
I don't even know how I got on your Substack (seriously how?), but keep doing what you're doing. As a libertarian economics professor said to me repeatedly when I was young: reasonable people can disagree.
What's happening is not reasonable. —Some San Francisco center left liberal techie
You missed this hero. Jeffrey Goldberg is definitely a top hero of the week. Can you imagine if he had exploited the information that we received from the Signal chat? Or even just was careless with it? Instead, he acted responsibly and has spoken in a way that holds accountable those who did this. —Cindy Jeffrey
Hello Joe,
Love the podcast and the movement that you are helping to lead!
While listening, I had to chuckle when you compared Trump and how he sees himself to John Wayne. As luck would have it, I just posted something about that on my Facebook the other day, which, shockingly enough, seems to have been buried by them due to Zuckerberg’s bromance with Donito Cheetolini.
Hope you enjoy it, and like-minded Joe’s think alike!
Fight on, brother! —Joe Espinola
Hi Joe,
As a 70-year-old renewable energy project developer, I have been watching with a tremendous sense of concern about this administration’s haphazard policy decisions that could tear my world apart.
Climate change for the past several years has been my primary focus and still is. I have 4 grandkids from 2 sons, and I really wonder wtf is going to happen to them. I live in a deep blue community, Santa Cruz, CA, but my work is in the Central Valley, MAGA City. My work is with commercial agriculture, literally the region that feeds a good portion of the country. Within this area are truly the haves and have nots: farm workers in “ag communities” such as Lost Hills, Pixley, and a hundred others pay through the nose for electricity. I calculated that up to 15% of a worker’s take-home pay goes towards paying the light bill.
Having just survived a quadruple bypass a few months ago, I had to do a reset on my “mission” to make the world a better place, spending whatever time I have left to accomplish my objective, which is to encourage the energy transition from fossil fuels to renewable sources, AND to reduce the levels of atmospheric carbon.
I get so fucking angry and frustrated that I can’t do more to fight those MAGA asswipes and the people they elected.
People like you who are articulate and stand for decency, compassion, and justice, you’re the ones I look to: you have the microphone and aren’t afraid to mix it up with the GOP.
Not sure what this little missive accomplishes. Let me know how I can help. —Mike Keller
He broke the laws of our nation before and was not held accountable. Unbelievable governance on all those who dishonored their sworn oath to uphold the Constitution and laws of our nation. Unbelievable governance! —Patrick
Hi Joe,
First of all, thank you for all you do!
I have never been so scared for our country in my life. Every day is worse than the day before.
The Constitution is being shredded right in front of our eyes, and nobody seems to care.
There has to be SOME normal Republicans in office right now that know in their hearts what is going on is wrong. Doesn't anyone have any courage? We all know that if Harris had won and she did even 1% of what Trump is doing, she'd have been impeached already.
Even if the people rise up like the citizens of Hungary and Serbia, what will that accomplish? He won't resign, and even if he could be convinced to do so, we would be stuck with Vance, who is just as bad.
I just feel so hopeless. If we ever get him and his cronies out of office, it will take generations for what is left of the USA to get back to “normal.”
Thanks for listening and letting me vent. —Gerri Strini
I know U.S. Congressmen and Senators can’t be “recalled,” but many state and local politicians live in states where “recall laws” exist that allow “We the People” to recall politicians who are complicit with the law-breaking actions of the current administration. Why am I not hearing or reading about any initiative to recall local and state politicians? —Glenn Braud
Sat down with this politically diverse group of Republicans, Democrats, former Republicans, and independents in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, yesterday. A stop on our “We are better than this. Time to prove it” tour. Conversations across America. Real conversations. We need them!
HuffPost [ [link removed] ] quoted me in this article about Donald Trump’s unconstitutional threat to run for a third term (I will have much more to say about this in our Thursday issue).
In this article on NJ.com [ [link removed] ], I was cited for calling out Bill Maher’s bullshit move of dining at the White House with Trump.
Hey, I want to hear from you!
