Today, Food & Water Watch filed a motion to intervene in a federal lawsuit to defend common-sense protections under the Packers & Stockyards Act that safeguard farmers and ranchers from discrimination, retaliation, and deception by massive corporate meatpackers.
This action comes as Musk and Trump are actively working to dismantle protections for workers, consumers, and the environment across the federal government. Big Ag industry groups are attacking a critical rule that we won from the Biden administration. Trump may not defend this rule in court, but we will.

Through the motion to intervene, we will fight to protect a rule adopted under the Biden Administration that safeguards livestock and poultry producers by spelling out certain types of discriminatory, retaliatory, and deceptive practices that violate the law.
For decades, a handful of corporations have leveraged illegal practices to control livestock markets, squeeze producers, and gouge consumers. Today, just four corporations control 81% of the beef market and 65% of the pork market; while 99.5% of broiler poultry production occurs under contracts. While prices skyrocket, farmers and ranchers receive only 15.9 cents of every food dollar spent.
After the rule was adopted, industry groups sued to strike it down. Typically, the federal government would defend rules like this against industry attacks, but we can’t trust the Trump administration to stand up to big agribusiness.
That’s why we’re going to court – to intervene in this case so family farmers and ranchers have a seat at the table in defending this important rule.

We filed the motion to intervene on behalf of the Ranchers Cattlemen Action Legal Fund United Stockgrowers of America, Western Organization of Resource Councils, Latino Farmers and Ranchers International, and the Alabama Contract Poultry Growers Association. The lawsuit seeking to overturn these farmer and rancher protections was filed by industry groups including the National Chicken Council and Meat Institute.
Food & Water Watch is fighting in Congress, in the states, in the streets, and in the courts for a just and sustainable food system that works for farmers, eaters, and the environment. This is just one of dozens of our lawsuits.
