It’s happening right now: Republicans in Congress are attacking one of the
last remaining checks on Trump’s power – the courts. Today’s House
Judiciary Committee hearing made it clear that MAGA Republicans want to
cripple the judiciary so Trump can break the law without consequences.
Their plan? Passing the “No Rogue Rulings Act (NORRA).” If they succeed,
this bill will strip federal district judges of their ability to issue
nationwide injunctions – the very tool that has quickly stopped some of
Trump’s most illegal actions in their tracks. Imagine it: a president with
virtually unchecked power, free to push his agenda even after a court has
found it almost certainly illegal.

During the hearing, Subcommittee Chair Darrell Issa labeled judges who
blocked Trump’s illegal actions as “rogue” and claimed they were
“malfunctioning.” In his view, the courts doing their job – defending the
Constitution and protecting our rights – is a problem.
But Representative Hank Johnson (D-GA) pointed out that overreach by
courts isn’t the problem; overreach by the Trump administration is the
problem, stating courts are acting “exactly as they should.”
What Issa and other Trump allies don’t want you to know is this: when a
president engages in unprecedented lawlessness, the courts are supposed to
step in. That’s how our system works – checks and balances that keep one
person from holding too much power. But Republicans are trying to rewrite
the rules to benefit Trump, clearing the way for his lawlessness.
MAGA Republicans are pushing to tear down our judicial system – because
right now they are standing in the way of Trump’s reckless and cruel
agenda. Their message is clear: If a judge rules against Trump, they’re a
problem that needs to be eliminated. That’s not democracy. That’s
authoritarianism.

continue to function as a system of checks and balances – or become a tool
