Dear John,
Last week, a Tufts graduate student, Rumeysa Ozturk, was snatched off the street and abducted by plain-clothed, masked federal officials.
Why? Daring to use her voice against injustice.
Show your solidarity to all who speak truth to power. Fight back in support of Rumeysa >>
It doesn't matter what we speak up about – it's clear freedom of speech is under attack. Rumeysa's detainment is proof enough. She is lawfully present in this country and yet because she used her voice to express her opinion, she's been arrested.
She is the second SEIU member to be picked up by ICE in the last month. Lewelyn Dixon – a green card holder who is 64 years old and has lived legally in the US for 50 years – was also detained.
How long until this happens to each of us? How long until our voices, raised against the wealthy, the powerful, bosses, and those that perpetuate injustice or attack workers' rights, are used to justify detainment or worse?
We won't stand by as this administration sets our First Amendment on fire before our eyes. And we certainly won't be silent as our union sister is abducted. Take action now >>
Our nation is strong because our voices differ – because from many ideas, backgrounds, religions, and races, we have come together as one – a nation that can stand tall as a beacon of freedom and human rights.
When they come for one of us – they sure as hell better be ready to face us all. Show your solidarity, and join us as we fight back. For Rumeysa, and for all who dare fight to make this world a better place.
In solidarity,
Jasmine Leli
