The collision was reported shortly before 1:30 a.m. near the intersection of Highland Avenue and First Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Before the impact, the Lamborghini driver was traveling northbound on Highland at a high rate of speed, an LAPD spokesperson said. The luxury vehicle collided with a green Toyota, whose driver and passenger were initially trapped inside. The two occupants of the Toyota were extricated by Los Angeles Fire Department firefighters and transported to a hospital. The female passenger was pronounced dead at the medical center, and the Toyota driver was listed in critical condition, according to police. The deceased victim's identity was not immediately released. ABC 7 Man Shot in Van Nuys A man was shot in Van Nuys Sunday. Officers responded to reports of a shooting just before 5:30 p.m. Sunday, near the intersection of Bassett Street and Woodley Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The man’s condition was not immediately known, and a description of him was not provided. There were no immediate details regarding a suspect or motive. MyNewsLA Man behind smash-and-grab robbery in Beverly Hills sentenced to 7 years in prison One of the men behind a smash-and-grab robbery in Beverly Hill was sentenced to seven years in federal prison, the Department of Justice announced Monday. Ladell Tharpe of Long Beach pleaded guilty last September after he and his accomplices, two men and a minor, drove three cars to a jewelry store on South Beverly Drive and used sledgehammers and crow bars to break the display cases before making away with more than $2.6 million worth of jewelry on March 22, 2022. Authorities said Tharpe and his group stole at least 19 bracelets, seven pairs of earrings, four necklaces, a pair of obelisks, eight rings, and 20 watches before running away from the store in a getaway vehicle, which had been stolen four days prior to the heist. A couple of days after the robbery, Tharpe, 39, posted pictures of himself holding a large stacks of cash on Instagram with the text “Robbery Gang,” the Justice Department said. Tharpe, who has been in federal custody since March 2023, was also ordered to pay $2,674,600 in restitution. “Brazen criminal action that directly targets our small businesses in Los Angeles County will not be tolerated,” said Acting United States Attorney Joseph McNally. “The consequences for such action are severe and penalized accordingly.” NBC 4 BWC: Man wearing ballistic vest opens fire at Florida officer, grabs rifle before fatal OIS A Jacksonville police officer was shot in the foot during a gunfight with an armed suspect wearing a ballistic vest, The Florida Times-Union reported. The suspect, who was carrying a rifle with a drum magazine and had a second pistol in his vehicle, died in the exchange, according to the report. The March 12 incident began when Officer A.C. Gaulding conducted a traffic stop, according to the report. As Gaulding exited his vehicle, the suspect opened his car door and began firing, body camera footage released March 29 shows. Gaulding returned fire, with both exchanging gunfire for several seconds. The officer was struck in the foot and retreated behind a white fence, video shows. As the officer moved away from the suspect, the suspect reached into his vehicle and removed a rifle. Gaulding then continued to fire shots at him, fatally wounding him. The officer is expected to recover, according to the report. The suspect was shot multiple times and later died at the hospital. Sheriff T.K. Waters called the incident alarming, pointing out the suspect’s apparent preparation for violence: “This guy had a bulletproof vest. As more cops were called to the scene the group dispersed, with more than 200 vehicles speeding off in all directions. New York Daily News Public Safety News Investigation underway after woman's body found on side of 10 Freeway in Mid-City area An investigation is underway after a women's body was found on the side of the I-10 Freeway in Mid-City on Sunday morning. The discovery was made at around 9 a.m. near westbound lanes just east of La Brea Avenue by Caltrans workers, according to a press release from the California Highway Patrol. They were called to the scene after learning that the body was covered by a white blanket in the Accident Inspection Site turnout of the freeway, officers said. Investigators have not yet provided information on the woman's identity or a possible cause of death. She was declared dead at the scene by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics. "The incident is still under investigation by the California Highway Patrol Southern Division Major Crimes Unit," the CHP release said. CBS 2 Person dies after traffic collision with Los Angeles fire engine A person was killed Sunday after a collision involving a member of the Los Angeles Fire Department driving a fire engine, authorities confirmed. According to the department, the incident occurred at about 10:45 a.m. at the intersection of Terra Bella and San Fernando Road in the Pacoima neighborhood of L.A., just outside of Whiteman Airport. The sole occupant inside the vehicle that collided with the fire engine was transported to a local hospital where they later died. Their identity was not immediately made public. A pair of LAFD firefighters were also transported with non-life threatening injuries. As of 1 p.m., it wasn’t clear how the collision occurred. No additional details were immediately made available. KTLA 5 Firefighters hoist woman found lying in Los Angeles River in Boyle Heights Firefighters hoisted a woman who was found lying in the Los Angeles River in Boyle Heights to safety on Sunday morning. They were called to the water near the 2700 block of E. Washington Avenue at around 9:30 p.m. upon learning that the woman was laying on her back in approximately 3-4 inches of static water," according to a press release from the Los Angeles Fire Department. Crews arrived and found the woman but due to her location and limited access to the area, they had to lower a rescuer from the LAFD Air Ops helicopter. At the time that they found the woman, who they believe is about 55 years old, firefighters said she could move her extremities but they were unable to determine her condition. After they were able to successful hoist her from the water, she was taken to a nearby hospital in serious condition. She has not been identified. CBS 2 LA Metro breaks ground on San Fernando Valley bus line improvements Los Angeles Metro celebrated the start of construction Friday morning on the new G (Orange) Line to the San Fernando Valley. The $668 million project is the first significant improvement to the bus line in 20 years, according to a memo from the transportation agency. The project is funded by 2016 voter-approved Measure M, a half-cent sales tax for transit expansion, traffic relief measures and to improve streets and sidewalks. Among the improvements are an aerial bridge over Van Nuys Boulevard, two additional bridges over Vesper Avenue and Sepulveda Boulevard, four-quadrant gates at 13 busy intersections between North Hollywood and Van Nuys and other safety features such as flashing lights, bells, raised medians and crosswalk gates for pedestrians and bicyclists. A new transit signal system will also be implemented. Metro officials noted buses will have an extended signal phase, giving them the next green light in an intersection's phasing cycle. Transit signal systems use technology to prioritize transit vehicles, like buses, at traffic lights. The upgrades are expected to reduce travel times end to end by upwards of 12 minutes – a 30% increase according to city officials.
