John --

It’s been an exceptionally difficult week for the movement. Protests organized in reaction to a slew of recent police murders have exposed horrifying violence from law enforcement across the country. The videos have been graphic and unsettling.

And the president is reveling in it. Cheering on police abusers from his bunker in the White House basement, Trump has repeatedly called for more escalation of force.

It was particularly chilling to see National Guard troops swarm the steps of the Lincoln Memorial -- the same place we met with our candidates in November. The contrast was striking. Our vision for representative democracy compared with theirs.

Speaker Pelosi responded to Trump’s tear-gassing of nonviolent protesters to clear the way for his weird Bible photoshoot by sending a sternly worded letter. And Mitch McConnell has, predictably, done nothing .

Our very democracy is in grave danger. This is the time for the House and Senate to be unified and stand up boldly against authoritarian rule. Token gestures won’t cut it, and silence is completely unacceptable.

If leaders like McConnell remain silent while the president threatens to use military force against American citizens, they are complicit.

Brand New Congress has three Senate candidates facing primaries this week. If they win, we have a chance to replace three Republican Senators: Mitch McConnell, Susan Collins and Shelley Moore Capito.

It’s critical that we elect representatives to the Senate who aren’t afraid to stand up to a rogue president and who will fight for robust police reforms. We need Senators committed to the relentless pursuit of racial justice -- people like Paula Jean Swearengin (WV), Charles Booker (KY) and Betsy Sweet (ME).

Let’s send a message by sending all of our BNC candidates to the general election and putting their Republican challengers on notice!
