TAKE DOWN TOBACCO DAY
At this year’s Take Down Tobacco Day, Representative Shimizu proudly stands with Hawaii’s youth as they take action against Big Tobacco. This National Day of Action unites young leaders from across the state in a powerful movement to combat the youth vaping epidemic and advocate for stronger tobacco regulations. The event featured a morning educational session, youth rally, sign-waving, and meeting with legislators.
Representative Muraoka had the privilege of meeting with youth advocates from "Flavors Hook Kids Hawai'i," a campaign dedicated to ending the sale of flavored tobacco products that appeal to children. These young individuals, representing various islands, visited the Capitol to discuss the detrimental effects of vaping on Hawaii's youth and to advocate for policies that protect their peers from nicotine addiction. Representative Muraoka commends their dedication to creating a healthier future for Hawaii's keiki.
At the Hawai'i State Capitol, Take Down Tobacco National Day of Action was an inspiring event that brought together youth advocates. Representative Matsumoto found it powerful to see young leaders using their voices to stand up against the harms of tobacco and promote a healthier future for their communities. Their passion and commitment served as a strong reminder of the importance of continued advocacy against tobacco use.
LEARNING THE ABACUS

As a part of Education Week 2025, Representative Reyes Oda attended a Student Showcase that gathered students across the State. She sat down with a student from Hawaiʻi island where he taught her a quick lesson on how to use an abacus to add and subtract. The student shared that learning the abacus helped him with his mental math and improved his counting skills.

Representative Garcia recognized the leaders of the Kapolei Neighborhood Security Watch for their outstanding service to public safety and community engagement. Honorees included Jodi Akau, Iwalani McBrayer, Raelene Like, Loke Neitzel, and Pastor Allen Cardines Jr.

Through their leadership, the Kapolei NSW has worked closely with law enforcement to prevent crime, support safety training and strengthen neighborhood security. Their efforts have led to the closure of illegal operations (i.e. game rooms) and the expansion of security watch programs across O‘ahu.

Representative Garcia commended their dedication, stating, “These leaders exemplify true community stewardship. Their work has made our neighborhoods safer and more united.”

Throughout his career, Mark has been involved in over 40 films, including The Chronicles of Narnia, Ray, Holes, and Son of God—projects that reflect themes of faith, redemption, and perseverance. He has also collaborated with artists such as Lauryn Hill, P.O.D., and ZZ Top, using music as a powerful tool to reach hearts and minds.

Representative Garcia was grateful for the opportunity to speak with Mark about how God is using him to influence culture through film and music. Their conversation was a reminder of the importance of using every platform to honor faith, uplift truth and inspire others with messages of hope.

HISTORIC STEP FORWARD: DHHL AWARDS 735 HOMESTEAD LEASES IN KAPOLEI

The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) awarded 735 homestead leases on March 22nd, a significant milestone for Native Hawaiian families. This is the largest issuance of undivided interest leases in over two decades and brings families closer to securing homes in Kaʻuluokahaʻi and Kaupeʻa, both in District 42. The Kaʻuluokahaʻi community will eventually offer around 1,000 single-family lots across 400 acres.

Representative Garcia remarked, “104 years after Prince Kūhiō’s legacy, we are fulfilling his mission to return Native Hawaiians to the land, restoring dignity and future to our Lāhui.”

The next steps for awardees include financial assessments and mortgage qualifications, with the first homes expected in five years. DHHL plans to award 400 more leases on Hawai‘i Island in April and nearly 1,000 on Maui in the fall, providing hope to over 29,000 families still on the waitlist.

This historic moment represents more than progress—it’s a long-awaited homecoming for generations who have waited to return to their ancestral lands. E Ola Ka Lāhui.
AARP HAWAI’I CAREGIVERS EVENT
AARP Hawai’i hosted a free community event at the Oahu Veterans Center. Representative Shimizu attended the event with his wife. At the event showcased a short documentary, Taking Care, which featured Seth and Lauren Rogen’s caregiving journey as they support her mother, a victim of Alzheimer’s. Community resources were also available at the event.
INSPIRING TOMORROW’S CHANGEMAKERS: BRINGING THE CAPITOL TO THE CLASSROOM

Representative Garcia had the privilege of participating in the 2025 Youth Capitol Commentary (YCC) at Kapolei High School, an initiative that engages students in the legislative process and promotes civic education.

Previously held only on Opening Day at the State Capitol, YCC has expanded in 2025 to include student engagement opportunities statewide from January through April.

Representative Garcia’s involvement reflects his ongoing commitment to education and inspiring the next generation to be informed, engaged citizens through hands-on learning about public service and the legislative process.
