Dear John, I have great news! The legislative work session was delayed for SB 1003, the radical assisted suicide bill that would eliminate crucial safeguards and put medically vulnerable people at risk. The Oregon Senate Judiciary Committee had planned to take up SB 1003 this afternoon. But after the overwhelming response by pro-life advocates like you urging committee members to vote “no,” the work session to consider the bill has been postponed until Wednesday. What does that mean? Simply this: That your pro-life action is working. SB 1003’s supporters are afraid they don’t have the votes necessary to move the bill out of committee. And if they don’t advance it by April 9th, the bill will have been defeated. This just goes to show what a tremendous difference pro-life advocates can make when we band together and make our voices heard. If you haven’t contacted committee members yet to urge them to vote no, please take the time to do so now. We’ve included contact information and a pre-crafted message that you can use to send a message to committee members at the bottom of this email. One more quick note: Last week, the Oregon Health Authority reported a devastating 8% increase in assisted suicide prescriptions in Oregon in 2024 following a huge 30% increase in 2023. And today, March 31st, we mark the 20th anniversary of the tragic death of Terri Schiavo, the young woman in a coma who died of starvation and dehydration after her feeding tube was removed. It was a horrifying case of court-ordered euthanasia and a powerful reminder that we must secure protections for medically vulnerable people. We remember Terri and her legacy today, and we mourn the increased prescription of lethal drugs here in Oregon. We also take time to celebrate the progress we’re making in resisting SB 1003 and recommit to always working to protect those who cannot speak up in their own defense. Thank you for being a crucial part of this life-saving mission with us. I know that you, as an Oregon lawmaker, want Oregon to be a place where people are treated with dignity and compassion. But I believe this bill communicates the opposite. Senate Bill 1003 would drastically lower guardrails in Oregon’s “Death With Dignity Act” (DWDA) by reducing the 15-day waiting period to a mere 48 hours; allowing non-physicians to prescribe lethal medication; and forcing health care facilities to publicly disclose their participation in assisted suicide, making it easier to funnel patients toward pro-assisted suicide facilities. Without a doubt, this bill would lead to a stark increase in the rates of assisted suicide deaths and produce a callous system of death on demand. While assisted suicide is often advertised as a “compassionate” option that provides “dignity” to people who are suffering, this is a dangerous falsehood. Assisted suicide and its expansion communicates that some lives—especially the elderly, disabled, and medically complex—are less worth living. This mentality places people with disabilities and mental illnesses at increased risk in our communities. Real dignity and compassion is shown in love, care, and support—not in offering death as a solution. Instead of expanding assisted suicide, we should invest in better palliative care and true support for those who are suffering. Please vote "No" on Senate Bill 1003.
