Like so many of you, I was horrified by the murder of George Floyd.

And though steps have been taken to bring justice to George Floyd’s family, it doesn’t change the fact that his life was wrongly taken, or that we have systemic racial justice issues in our country that threaten Black lives.

That’s why so many Americans have joined together to demand racial and social justice.

I served as a member of the United States Navy for 25 years to protect the rights and freedoms you and I enjoy every single day – including our freedom of speech and our right to peacefully protest.

These rights are enshrined in our Constitution and cannot be infringed upon. And in the past few days, so many of you have used your voices to speak up against injustice.

What we’re hearing is the pain felt by those whose experiences with police officers have been far too similar to George Floyd’s, and the fear from those worried that future interactions will end the same way.

That pain is real, and it’s overwhelming.

We must continue to demand accountability and a just system that does not discriminate against anyone because of race. These issues require urgent action and long term commitment. They also require leaders who are willing to say out loud what is right and what is wrong, and who understand that we can have safe communities and a system free of racial discrimination.

That’s why I’m committed to listening and being part of the solution to address systemic racism in our justice system and our society. We can and we must work together to bring about real change.
