** Border Angels Update
------------------------------------------------------------

We are excited to share with you the story of the most recent recipient of our bond program, Asim.

Asim is an asylum-seeker from the country of Sudan and came to the US in hopes of a better life. While detained at the Otay Mesa Detention Center, his pod was isolated due to someone becoming ill. Asim was one of the lucky ones to not contract COVID-19.

As one of the few English speakers at the detention center, Asim selflessly helped many other asylum-seekers contact organizations to ensure their release. Two of our bond recipients from Cameroon, in fact, were referred to us through his kind work.

Despite the horrible and terrifying conditions he was exposed to, Asim always remained positive and patient. It’s people like him that keep us going, and his bravery inspires us to continue our work. Asim is finally on his way to being reunited with his family.

Although it's heartbreaking to read and hear about these horrible injustices, these stories reminds us of the strength and resilience of our migrant folks. They deserve dignity and respect, and not a country that subjects black and brown folks to such conditions especially during a global pandemic.

Asim represents so many others that are subjected to inhumane policies. We must not forget the urgency of getting everyone out of the Otay Mesa Detention Center. This pandemic continues to be unforgiving, and we will not allow any more lives lost.

With your continued support, our shelter directors are able to buy fresh produce and groceries for our migrant families in Tijuana. The pandemic is reaching its peak in Baja California, and it is more important than ever to help our shelters survive! We are so grateful for your contributions that help us feed and care for our beloved families, and to our shelter directors for ensuring the safety of their inhabitants. With so much turmoil and uncertainty, we are glad we can provide a bit of hope and support for our friends in Tijuana!

Thank you so much!!!

** Familias Reunidas Bond Program
------------------------------------------------------------

Jack, a 25-year-old migrant, was bonded out with the help of our bond program after being detained for five months. He fled his home in Haiti in hopes of a better life and opportunity only to end up at the nightmare that is the Otay Mesa Detention Center.

Inside the detention center, the very place where Carlos Ernesto Escobar Mejia unjustly lost his life, Jack contracted COVID-19. He became very ill. Instead of providing him with medical care when he started experiencing symptoms, the detention center staff put him in isolation and gave him crackers.

Thankfully Jack has recovered and is able to self quarantine now. His story reminds us of the strength and resilience of migrants. We must share these stories to shed light on how brown and black people are treated unjustly.

Thank you for your support and please to continue advocating to make sure our sisters and brothers are #FreeAndAlive ([link removed][UNIQID]) .

MUCHAS GRACIAS MANUEL!

Thank you for being part of our Board of Directors and for doing your part to make a difference. Your many years of experience as an attorney will help advance our mission and advocacy efforts.

Manuel has even offered free legal representation to those who participate in protests at the Otay Mesa Detention Center and have gotten a citation. It brings comfort knowing that we have individuals like yourself helping us fight against the injustice and abuse of power we are faced with.

We look forward to the future with you on our board!

THANK YOU! So much to Jessica Deyo and everyone at Fracht USA Logistics and Supply Company for your generous contribution! We are so grateful for organizations promoting a culture of love and compassion like yours!

Discrimination is not only against African Americans, but also against Hispanics

By Tania Luviano

"Discrimination is not only against African Americans, but also against Hispanics.

"We live it every day," said Dulce Garcia of the Regional Coalition of hate crimes in San Diego, who said that she was a witness that racism is not only on streets like Barrio Logan's, but throughout the county."

Border Angels is a proud member of the San Diego Regional Hate Crimes Coalition.
This coalition is a collaboration of non-governmental organizations, community-based groups, and public servants. They coordinate outreach, education, and dialogue regarding bullying, hate incidents, and hate crimes in the San Diego Region. The goal is the prevention of hate in the San Diego area through collaboration and collective understanding of our individual missions.

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in fear, uncertainty, and concern for the security of our health, finances and liberties. Historically, these conditions have led many to look for someone to blame, demonize, and scapegoat.

"More than 250,000 people have signed a petition demanding that the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (IEC) agency end its alleged use of a disinfectant spray immigration advocates say has been causing serious side effects in detainees.

By early Wednesday morning, more than 259,000 people had signed the petition published on Change.org following allegations of guards with The GEO Group, which operates the Adelanto ICE Processing Center, excessively spraying the facility with HDQ Neutral in an effort to combat the spread of coronavirus.

The excessive use of the highly concentrated spray, immigration advocates have alleged, has caused serious side effects among detainees, including headaches, nose bleeds, skin rashes and fainting."

'Bloody Noses, Burning Eyes': Advocates File Complaint Over Chemical Disinfectant Use At Adelanto Detention Center

By Elly Yu

"Advocacy groups for immigrant detainees have filed a civil rights complaint with the federal Department of Homeland Security, alleging detainees have been subject to chemical exposure at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center in San Bernardino County.

The facility currently holds about 1,100 detained immigrants, including asylum seekers and people who are fighting deportation.

Since May 11, several detainees have reported to advocates that the frequent use of a disinfectant used at the facility has caused people to have eye irritation, bloody noses, and cough up blood."

Immigrants anxious as they await Supreme Court DACA decision

By Astrid Galvan

"PHOENIX — Reyna Montoya’s hands get sweaty and her throat feels like it’s closing just talking about the anxiety of every Monday this spring.

The immigrant rights activist who’s shielded from deportation and allowed to legally work in the U.S. under an Obama-era program sets a 6 a.m. alarm so she’s alert when the latest Supreme Court decision may be posted online about an hour later.

Montoya, like 650,000 others enrolled in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, is waiting for the justices to release their decision on President Donald Trump’s attempt to end the protections. The high court heard arguments last fall and typically releases rulings on Mondays in the spring. But it’s unclear exactly when an answer will come because the court sometimes issues decisions on other days as work wraps up for the summer."

Citizenship concerns remain as immigration agency reopens

The federal agency charged with overseeing legal immigration is resuming services in many cities across the country Thursday after being shuttered for more than two months because of the coronavirus pandemic

By PHILIP MARCELO

"More than 100,000 people nationwide are impacted, and thousands of them each day risk running out of time to become an American citizen before the presidential election, according to Boundless Immigration, a Seattle-based tech company that helps immigrants through the citizenship process.

Registration deadlines for primary elections are approaching in a number of states this summer, and would-be voters must be citizens when they register or risk facing criminal charges or even deportation, Boundless and immigrant rights groups have said."
