John,
The fight for trans rights and the fight for abortion rights are deeply intertwined, and at the core of both of them is the very basic right to control our own bodies.
And as we observe Trans Day of Visibility, it’s crucial to note that people across the gender spectrum need access to abortion care, including trans men and gender non-conforming folks.
Anti-LGBTQ+ bills have continued to surge in state legislatures. In fact, the ACLU is currently tracking 527 anti-LGBTQ bills across the country, many of which specifically target access to gender-affirming care.
The rhetoric and strategy driving this onslaught echo the tactics that MAGA politicians use when attacking abortion rights: seeding misinformation, using misleading language to hide their unpopular policies, and deliberately targeting our most vulnerable communities.
Whether it’s access to gender-affirming care or access to abortion, these assaults are about undermining our personal autonomy.
And like we’ve seen in the abortion fight, these harmful laws not only create barriers to care for patients, but also discourage medical professionals from providing essential care out of fear of criminalization.
Our bodies, our decisions, and our rights should never be used as political pawns. A world with reproductive freedom is one in which trans lives are valued and celebrated, and everyone can access the healthcare they need, with safety and dignity.
In solidarity,
Team Vote Pro-Choice
