While the media focuses its attention on Donald Trump’s circus of chaos in Washington, a humanitarian crisis is unfolding in warzones across the world as Trump’s foreign aid freeze pulls the rug out from under the world’s most vulnerable women.

Over 48 different grants have been stripped away from UNFPA, depriving the humanitarian organization of critical funds used to provide critical maternal health care, protection from violence, rape treatment, and other lifesaving care in over 25 crisis-stricken countries, including Afghanistan, Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gaza, Haiti, Mali, Sudan, Syria and Ukraine.

Over the last four years, these lifesaving investments in UNFPA prevented more than 17,000 maternal deaths, 9 million unintended pregnancies, and nearly 3 million unsafe abortions by expanding access to voluntary family planning.

Now that the funding has been stripped away without warning, thousands of health clinics will be forced to close. Women in crisis zones will be forced to give birth without medicines, midwives, or equipment, putting their lives and their babies’ lives in jeopardy. Rape survivors will be denied counseling and medical care. Midwives delivering babies in the world’s worst humanitarian crises will lose their ability to function. Shipments of lifesaving medical supplies to refugee camps will be disrupted.
