In January, IJ launched our Project on Immunity and Accountability <[link removed]>, a groundbreaking effort to challenge legal immunity doctrines that have allowed government officials to get away with egregious
constitutional violations for decades. Amid the outcry over George Floyd’s tragic death, this issue is resonating across the country as never before.
I thought you’d be interested in this USA Today op-ed <[link removed]> by IJ Attorneys Patrick Jaicomo and Anya Bidwell. Vox <[link removed]> also published an article highlighting IJ’s compelling petition in West v. Winfield, one of eight qualified immunity cases pending before the U.S. Supreme Court. And yesterday, IJ Senior Attorney Bob McNamara participated in a discussion on NPR <[link removed]> about how these doctrines enable government abuse to persist unchecked and whether the Supreme Court will finally decide to reexamine them.
The law by nature moves slowly, but moments like this can be a catalyst for rapid legal change. IJ is using every tool at our disposal—including a massive social media campaign—to eliminate these unconstitutional doctrines and to establish permanent protection for all Americans against government abuse.
