Email from Rep. Malliotakis Here's a quick update on what I've been working on during a busy few weeks in Washington, DC, Staten Island and Southern Brooklyn   My friend, Here's a quick update on what I've been working on during a busy few weeks in Washington, DC, Staten Island, and Southern Brooklyn... HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE HILL WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATION AT THE CAPITOL Our Bipartisan Women’s Caucus joined Smithsonian American Women's History Museum in hosting a Women’s History Month Celebration with Wonder Woman herself, Lynda Carter. When Wonder Woman first aired 50 years ago, women were still battling for many rights including equal pay, the ability to get a credit card without a male co-signer, protections against pregnancy discrimination, sexual harassment, the right to serve on juries, and the ability to join military academies. President Trump endorses my push to build a women’s history museum on the National Mall “100%” LEARN MORE ENDING NEW YORK CITY'S PUSH FOR NON-CITIZEN VOTING I’m pleased that we prevailed in our final round in court and have stopped New York City’s Non-Citizen voting law once and for all! The state’s highest court, the Court of Appeals, has sided with us and two lower courts in striking down this unconstitutional law. There is nothing more important than preserving the integrity of our election system, and in today’s age, the government should be working to create more trust in our elections, not less. The right to vote is a sacred right given only to United States citizens.   ROOTING OUT MEDICAID WASTE, FRAUD, AND ABUSE WATCH Congress must root out Medicaid waste, fraud, and abuse, which are rampant in New York and across the nation. This shouldn’t be a political issue—we have a fiduciary responsibility to protect taxpayers and this important program for the vulnerable citizens who rely on it. SUPPORTING OUR 9/11 HEROS AND STRENGTHENING NEW YORK'S NATIONAL GUARD I met with with the Uniformed Firefighters Association & New York City Fire Officers Local 854 AFL/CIO as we work together to protect and extend the World Trade Center Health Program that provides medical monitoring and treatment to the heroes and civilians suffering from 9/11 illnesses. This month, I also met with representatives from the New York National Guard to discuss how Congress can support their efforts and strengthen the operational readiness of both the New York Army and Air National Guard. We are grateful for their dedicated service to our state and our nation. HOUSE PASSES BIPARTISAN LEGISLATION TO CRACK DOWN ON UNEMPLOYMENT FRAUD House Republicans are committed to protecting hardworking taxpayers—while Democrats continue to shield fraudsters and criminals, including those who stole over $100 billion in pandemic unemployment funds. That’s why the Ways & Means Committee’s legislation—which extends the statute of limitations so law enforcement can continue to investigate and prosecute pandemic unemployment fraud—passed the House with bipartisan support. WATCH CONGRESSIONAL HISPANIC CONFERENCE'S PRIORITIES FOR THIS CONGRESS I joined members of the Congressional Hispanic Conference to share our legislative priorities for this Congress. We’re united in increasing employment opportunities, making America affordable, streamlining immigration for the law-abiding, and advancing other policies that support our Hispanic communities & all Americans.   IN THE DISTRICT CELEBRATING ST. PATRICK'S DAY Our district is home to one of the largest Irish-American populations in the nation. This year, it was a pleasure to host our good friend, Irish Ambassador to the US Geraldine Byrne Nason at Staten Island's St. Patrick’s Day Parade. We appreciate the Ambassador joining us at this year's Staten Island Parade as we all came together to celebrate our community’s rich Irish culture! I was also glad to see everyone along 3rd Avenue in Bay Ridge! WORKING WITH NPS TO SECURE A NEW OPERATOR FOR AVIATOR SPORTS CENTER We are actively working with National Park Service to identify an operator to take over the lease at Aviator Sports & Events Center at Brooklyn's Floyd Bennett Field, an important facility providing recreational opportunities for our youth and community. Although the facility is not located in my district, many of my constituents utilize it. With many sports leagues set to begin their next season around the time the lease ends, the future of these youth teams will be jeopardized without an alternative—making it imperative that a new operator is selected as soon as possible to ensure minimal disruption to our community. LEARN MORE STANDING UP FOR STATEN ISLAND: OPPOSING SHELTER PROPOSAL AND CITY OF "YES" We stand with Community Board 3 and the South Shore community in strong opposition to any plan or proposal to build a homeless shelter in Richmond Valley. This is a residential neighborhood with schools and parks, and putting a shelter in this area would pose a significant public safety risk for residents. While nothing has been officially confirmed, it wouldn’t be the first time the City has moved forward without engaging the community—shutting out residents from having any input. READ MORE I also joined members of the NYC Council’s bipartisan Common Sense Caucus lawsuit, along with community organizations and elected officials from across the city to voice our unified opposition to Mayor Adams’ “City of Yes” which would only worsen traffic, congestion, and overcrowding in our neighborhoods as well as allow battery storage facilities to be placed in residential areas. READ MORE $20 BILLION CMA CGM INVESTMENT, $300 MILLION EXPANSION AT PORT LIBERTY This month, we had a big win for Staten Island as this private investment will bring $300 million to Port Liberty to expand the port’s capacity, creating 300 good-paying union jobs. After decades of outsourcing maritime jobs and investment, this commitment marks a crucial step toward revitalizing our domestic industry and strengthening America’s competitiveness by promoting investment in our ports, infrastructure, and waterways to drive long-term job creation and economic growth.   IN CASE YOU MISSED IT   Elected officials attempt to keep Aviator Sports and Events Center open “Although the facility is not located in my district, many of my constituents utilize it,” Malliotakis said. “With many sports leagues set to begin their next season around the time the lease ends, the future of these youth teams will be jeopardized without an alternative — making it imperative that a new operator is selected as soon as possible to ensure minimal disruption to our community." READ MORE NYC’s law allowing noncitizens to vote is dead as state’s highest court shuts it down Rep. Nicole Malliotakis served as a lead plaintiff along with her mother Veralia, a Cuban refugee, in the lawsuit joining other local elected officials. She previously argued the law, if it had gone into effect, would have made individuals in migrant shelters eligible to vote in New York City elections after 30 days if they had received work authorization. “It is my hope that left wing lawmakers stop pushing these unconstitutional and reckless measures that dilute the voices of American citizens,” she said in a statement Thursday.   READ MORE Malliotakis proposes legislation to end inhumane animal testing on federal level Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (R – Staten Island/South Brooklyn) is working to pass legislation to end the government testing on animals for medically unnecessary procedures. “It’s cruel, it’s inhumane, it’s unnecessary, and it’s costly,” Malliotakis, an animal lover, told the Advance/SILive.com. “There’s a way we can save taxpayer money, be humane and protect these animals, as well as focus on modern technologies that can be used for some experimentation.” READ MORE Washington DC Office 1124 Longworth House Office Building Washington, DC 20515 (202) 225-3371 Staten Island Office 1698 Victory Blvd Suite 2L Staten Island, NY 10314 (718) 568-2870 Brooklyn Office 7716 Third Ave. Brooklyn, NY 11209 (718) 306-1620   [link removed] Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) | 1124 Longworth House Office Building | Washington, DC 20515 US Unsubscribe | Update Profile | Constant Contact Data Notice
