We have to understand how unprepared the Democratic Party, the media, and hell, America itself was for this moment.
America, where for nearly 250 years, save for the Civil War, political and policy differences were settled through democratically held elections, where our leaders accepted the verdict of we the people and participated in the peaceful transfer of power, was unprepared for Donald Trump the destroyer.
America still believed in elections and democracy even if Donald Trump did not. America was not a third-world country that jailed its past presidents even if they had incited a coup. Most Americans knew Trump had lost, even if he lied constantly about it.
That’s why Merrick Garland, the Biden Administration, many in the Democratic Party, and the press remained blinded by a bias to return to normal. Many were good people, but their training and experience had ill-prepared them for the moment. Some of us were stunned. I remember Stuart Stevens turning to me at the time and saying, “Too many lack the imagination to understand the enormity of the danger.”
What they missed was that we were not up against a political party and its losing candidate for President. We were up against a movement to destroy everything America had stood for. Donald Trump was a dangerous destroyer, leading a movement to take and hold power beyond the reigns of any order but his own.
That threat was never prosecuted legally nor met with the political ferocity the moment demanded to counter it in January 2021. I wrote more about that here [ [link removed] ].

So the American people are just now beginning to understand the threat Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and the destroyers are unleashing on their lives and our nation as they dismantle our government department by department, destroy our alliances, and favor our enemies.
America, its institutions, the Democrats, and the press have never faced an all-out movement to destroy America from within. Having never imagined it possible, they are ill-prepared to lead the counter-movement to save it. Many still mutter it can’t happen here. Even as it clearly is happening here.
It is up to us, the American people, to rise up and build the counter-movement to save America from Trump and the destroyers.
And it's happening.
A louder opposition is growing. Younger voices in the Democratic Party are emerging. Thousands are showing up to rallies and town halls. Peaceful protests are growing. Opposition media is being launched here at Lincoln Square. Dan Gillmor’s Cornerstone of Democracy [ [link removed] ], Dave Troy’s America 2.0 [ [link removed] ], and other pro-democracy newsletters are emerging and growing.
X is shrinking while our pro-democracy social network Sez Us [ [link removed] ] continues to grow every day since its public launch a few weeks ago.
Trump is losing support as his wrecking ball hits our veterans, our farmers, our children, and health care. Elon Musk is falling even lower than Trump and dragging him down. We are winning special elections in places Trump won by 30 points.
People are showing up.
Republican officeholders are feeling the pressure. Even Trump had to withdraw the nomination of Elise Stefanik for UN Ambassador because of the fear of losing Congress.
You, in your efforts to push back against this anti-democratic movement, are not alone. You are part of a growing movement. America is rising. Trump is getting weaker; we are getting stronger.
What you do now matters. It will take all of us, but we can build the movement that saves America and wrests power from Trump’s toxic grasp. We are the cavalry. All of us. One by one getting more Americans to see the danger and join us to save our country.
The words of Abraham Lincoln’s Lyceum address should be made to ring in every American’s ears:
“At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.”
After nearly 250 years, the American people are not going to willingly participate in the death by suicide of our great nation. Who will tell the people? Who will lead? You will. We will.
