Open Appointments Application Process - What Else to Know

  • Board contacts can answer questions about applying for a seat.
  • Appointing authorities are organizations that review applications and decide who to appoint to vacant seats.
  • You may apply for a seat after the twenty-one-day posting period but keep in mind that an appointing agency may have finished reviewing applications by that time.
  • Applications remain active for one year unless withdrawn by the applicant.
  • During that year, applications to a board may be considered for any vacancy on that board.

Based on Minnesota's Open Appointments Laws, the Secretary of State acts as an administrator in publishing board vacancies, receiving applications, and recording appointments. OSS does not screen applicants or provide input on who to appoint.
