Protect your Genetic Data Following
23andMe's Bankruptcy Filing​

On March 23, 2025, 23andMe filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. This action has raised significant concerns about the future of the sensitive genetic data the company holds. California Attorney General Rob Bonta has issued a consumer alert (https://oag.ca.gov/news/press-releases/attorney-general-bonta-urgently-issues-consumer-alert-23andme-customers), urging individuals who have used 23andMe's services to consider deleting their data to prevent potential misuse.

Why This Matters:  With the company's assets potentially being sold during bankruptcy proceedings, there is a risk that your personal genetic information could be transferred to unknown entities. Protecting your privacy is paramount, and taking proactive steps now can help safeguard your data.

Take Action: Delete Your 23andMe Data:  To remove your personal information from 23andMe's database, follow these steps:

1. Log into your 23andMe account on their website.
2. Go to the "Settings" section of your profile.
3. Revoke Research Consent: If you previously consented to participate in 23andMe's research initiatives, you can withdraw your consent by adjusting your preferences in the "Settings" section under "Preferences."
4. Request Sample Destruction: If you provided a physical DNA sample, you might also request its destruction by contacting 23andMe's customer care.  [email protected]
5. Scroll to the "23andMe Data" section at the bottom of the page and click "View."
6. Download Your Data (Optional): If you wish to retain a copy of your genetic information, select the option to download it to your device before proceeding.
7. Delete Your Data: Scroll to the "Delete Data" section and click "Permanently Delete Data."
8. Confirm Deletion: You will receive an email from 23andMe; click the link in the email to confirm your request.
