We filed a lawsuit to protect immigrants nationwide.

Dear John,

Today, the American Immigration Council filed a lawsuit to protect immigrants nationwide against the Trump administration’s plan to turn the U.S. into a “show me your papers” state.

Under the Trump administration’s new requirement, millions of immigrants will be forced to register with the federal government and carry proof of their registration at all times—a policy that is likely to lead to widespread racial profiling.

The requirement is vague, confusing, and infringes upon the Fifth Amendment right to avoid self-incrimination. And the regulation was issued without considering input from the public. So, along with our partners, we filed suit against the administration.

With a stroke of the pen, the Trump administration is trying to turn the U.S. into a ‘show me your papers’ state where millions of immigrants, naturalized citizens, and natural born citizens can be harassed by law enforcement because of their skin color, the neighborhood they live in, or the language they speak.

We won’t let this stand. The Council is committed to fighting for immigrant communities and the principles at the heart of our country. We continue this work despite new, direct threats from the administration to sanction lawyers who use our democratic systems to challenge unconscionable immigration policies and practices. Together, we won’t back down.

If you’d like to support us in this critical moment, consider making a gift to the Council today.

In solidarity,

Michelle Lapointe
