After baby’s fentanyl death, L.A. prosecutors accuse mom and grandpa of murder
At 17 months old, Justin Bulley should have been safe when he fell asleep on a couch next to his grandfather in a Lancaster apartment last year. But the baby never woke up from the Sunday afternoon nap. His grandfather, 73-year-old Jessie Milton Darthard, admitted to smoking fentanyl out of a glass pipe while next to the boy, and then falling asleep, court records show. Paramedics found the child unresponsive, and a medical examiner ruled that he overdosed. A coroner’s report determined Justin’s death was accidental, but L.A. County prosecutors are pursuing murder charges against Darthard and the boy’s mother, arguing they were responsible. Although prosecutors have previously treated overdose deaths as homicides, a case involving a baby is rare. Only once before have L.A. County authorities filed murder charges against parents or guardians whose drug use had fatal consequences for children, according to Jonathan Hatami, the assistant head of the L.A. County district attorney’s office’s complex child abuse unit.

Skateboarder, 22, left for dead by hit-and-run driver in L.A. identified
Investigators have yet to locate and arrest the motorist involved in a deadly Koreatown hit-and-run that left a 22-year-old skateboarder dead. The fatal March 27 collision occurred at around 6 a.m. near the intersection of 6th and Catalina streets as the victim, now identified as Oscar Lopez, was riding his skateboard to work. In surveillance footage captured by a nearby business, the driver of a gray four-door sedan is seen traveling westbound on Catalina Street when they struck and killed the 22-year-old as he approached 6th Street, officials said. The grainy footage of the crash did not, however, provide investigators with any additional information about who was behind the wheel of the car. While police scoured the scene for evidence, closing 6th Street between Berendo Street and Kenmore Avenue for more than two hours, a white canopy covering the remains of the 22-year-old could be seen, as well as one of his shoes knocked loose from the impact and broken pieces of his skateboard.

‘What will it take’: Mass. mayor concerned about ‘revolving door’ of repeat offenders
After about a decade of voicing the same concerns, Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno is once again questioning, “What will it take” to keep what he calls violent repeat offenders off the streets. His renewed plea comes after police arrested eight Springfield residents last week, including a repeat firearms offender. Jahiem Sutherland, 21, is one of the eight city residents who was arrested on March 12, according to the Springfield Police Department. In addition to his prior firearms convictions, Sutherland has two open firearms cases. Sutherland was held in jail from October 2023 to April 2024 in one open gun-related case, according to court records. A judge found the man dangerous in February 2024. In April 2024 , his bail was set at $4,000 with conditions, such as wearing a GPS. Sutherland was indicted in January 2024 in another gun-related case, court records show. His bail conditions were the same as in the first case. In both cases, there were notices for violations of pre-trial release conditions, with the most recent last month.
