Yesterday, Trump once again refused to rule out seeking a third term in office. Yes, a constitutional amendment explicitly prohibits it. Yes, such an attempt would trigger a legal showdown and a potential constitutional crisis.
But no, this is not a surprise.
Donald Trump is an authoritarian. He does not care about the Constitution or the rule of law, nor do his administration or the leaders of the Republican Party. He has contempt for norms and institutions. He views traits like loyalty, honor and dignity as weaknesses to be exploited. He only respects those who wield raw power.
Any civic, corporate or political leader who ignores who Trump is and what he stands for operates at a distinct disadvantage. In this time of crisis, such ignorance is not only unacceptable but dangerous.
If there is one institution that should serve as a xxxxxx against Trump’s lawlessness, it is the legal profession. Lawyers are uniquely positioned to challenge his authoritarianism…
