It’s Cesar Chavez Day, friend!

Today, communities worldwide celebrate the hard-won achievements of California labor leader and civil rights champion Cesar Chavez.

Cesar left his well-paying job to become an organizer, making the equivalent of $52.54 a week to fight for fair pay, safe conditions, and much-needed protections for the farm workers that fed — and still feed — most Americans.

Cesar’s fight was never about just one person. He and his partners, Dolores Huerta and Philip Vera Cruz and Larry Itliong, brought together Latinos, Filipinos, white allies, and Labor leaders to uplift some of California’s most marginalized communities. But his work was just the beginning, and we have to strengthen worker protections to continue his legacy and keep moving workers forward → [[link removed]]
TAKE THE WORKER PROTECTIONS SURVEY [[link removed]]

San Diego County has always depended heavily on the labor of undocumented farmworkers, whose status has left them vulnerable to exploitation and abuse. These are the very people Cesar helped establish the United Farm Workers (UFW) to empower.

Unions carrying on Cesar’s fight protect us from discrimination, safety hazards, and unfair wage cuts at work. Giving workers a voice empowers us all, so Monica has supported unions from day one — advocating for union members in negotiations, leading resolutions in favor of fair wages and better working conditions, walking picket lines, taking part in boycotts, and more.

And now, she wants to hear from you. Do the County’s worker protections work for you?

Thank you for making your voice heard, and Happy Cesar Chavez Day!

In solidarity,

Team Monica
