Friend --
We are thankful to all those who were able to join our community call on Wednesday. These are challenging times, and we are grateful for the opportunity to come together and have conversations about how we can support critical policing reforms, combat institutional racism, and support the Black community.
We are in a critical moment in our nation’s history and we must all do our part. As such, we are sharing a list of FIVE action items that you can do TODAY to defend Black lives and support the fight for policing reforms.
- Contact your Member of Congress and demand change. By sending this action alert to your Member, you are asking for 10 critical police reforms. <[link removed]>
- Support local civilian review boards. Contact your local government officials and inquire what oversight is in place locally.
- Educate yourself. There are numerous recommended readings on race and the history of police violence. While there are many more resources available, we recommend you start with these:
a.) The New Jim Crow <[link removed]>, by Michele Alexander;
b.) Stamped from the Beginning: A definitive history of racist ideas in America <[link removed]>, by Ibram X. Kendi;
c.) How to be an Antiracist <[link removed]>, by Ibram X. Kendi.
- Support local Black owned businesses.To get you started,here is a list of Black owned bookstores. <[link removed]>
- VOTE and take the CENSUS. One of the biggest impacts we can have is at the polls.Make sure you are registered to vote. <[link removed]>Make a plan. Vote up and down the ballot. And if you have not already filled out your 2020 Census,please do it today <[link removed]>.
