If enacted, it would be the largest rollback of federal voting rights since Reconstruction.
Friend,
Voting rights are key to the function of a healthy democracy. For centuries, communities of color, people with disabilities and women have fought tirelessly to have one of their most fundamental rights granted. But today, that fundamental right is in jeopardy. Congress recently introduced an extreme bill that, if passed, would disenfranchise millions of eligible voters.
The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act is a dangerous bill that would heavily burden every eligible voter and undermine free and fair elections. If enacted, it would be the largest rollback of federal voting rights since Reconstruction.
Friend, join the SPLC in denouncing this draconian legislation by contacting your member of Congress right now.
TAKE ACTION
This legislation would require most Americans to provide a passport or birth certificate to register to vote and each time they update their information. More than 21 million voting-eligible people do not have this kind of documentary proof of citizenship.
It would also effectively end mail-in and online voter registration, rolling back decades of modernization that made our elections more accessible and secure.
And now, Trump is trying to take matters into his own hands, issuing an illegal and unconstitutional executive order (EO) that, if allowed to stand, would similarly make it harder for millions of Americans to vote. While Trump does not have the authority to do much of what this new EO outlines, the fact that he’s trying nonetheless represents a dangerous attack on voters and on our democracy.
The ability to participate in our democracy should not be restricted by bureaucratic red tape that impacts millions of people. The SAVE Act and this deceptive EO are just another way extremists are pushing an anti-democratic agenda — like the one outlined in Project 2025 — that will have real-life consequences, harming millions of Americans.
We will not back down. We will not go back. We must all work together to safeguard our fundamental rights and freedoms.
Friend, please contact your member of Congress today, and urge them to vehemently oppose this extreme bill.
