John,

This has been a difficult time for Americans across our country and here in Maricopa County. As a law enforcement leader, I felt the need to speak up in wake of last week’s tragedy in Minneapolis.

I want to share my message to those who bravely serve our community:

“I take no satisfaction in criticizing the actions of another law enforcement member. Yet, I have the responsibility to practice what I preach in leading by example. The death of George Floyd was an egregious and unforgivable act that we should all condemn.

We should condemn it to ensure the affected hear our voice in expressing those actions do not reflect our beliefs. We should condemn it to ensure we have the courage to hold ourselves accountable to the same capacity we enforce the laws on others. We should condemn it to stand strong and convicted in the belief we are the standard bearers for ethical law enforcement. We should condemn it because the truth matters and we seek the truth. As your Sheriff, I condemn the acts that led to the death of George Floyd.”

I commend the members of our organization who are leading by example in suppressing the criminal elements infused within the lawful protests. And I stand with those who are peacefully advocating for an end to long-standing injustice.

Right now, we have an opportunity to overcome issues that have always existed. The problems of racial inequality in our country have never been properly addressed. We must challenge ourselves to be better, as individuals and as a community — and I know we are up to the challenge.

We must not forget that despite our differences, we all make up one caring, vibrant community here in Maricopa County — the community I swore to serve and protect. I pledge that my actions will speak louder than my words in fighting injustice and ensuring civil liberties.

In service,

— Sheriff Paul Penzone
