Dear John
This past week has been tough for our country. The tragic and unjust death of
George Floyd has led to emotions running high throughout the nation and the world. A mixture of peaceful protests and violent riots have spread across every state, even here in Alabama. However, I still believe in the goodness of Americans and in the positive hope we all maintain deep down. In the coming days, weeks, and months I think it is important to look at how we can become a better country in every way. That includes properly representing people in Congress by both legislation and voting procedures, celebrating legendary Americans, and honoring those who sacrificed everything so the rest of us can live freely. (Speaking of honoring those who sacrificed everything, there is a special section below on remembering D-Day.)
Great Improvement in Unemployment Numbers
Just yesterday, (Thursday) many economic pontificators were on TV predicting that when the new unemployment numbers come out on Friday morning, the unemployment rate would be above 20% at levels not seen since the Great Depression.
Well, the numbers are now out, and the unemployment rate actually dropped to 13.3% as the economy added 2.5 million jobs. As states like Alabama have reopened, we have begun the process of reigniting this great American economic engine. I believe this number will continue to come down as more people go back to work.
Responsible Stimulus
As you may recall, Democrats in the House of Representatives passed a $3 trillion bill known as the Heroes Act two weeks ago. This bill was nothing short of a liberal wish list that was dreamed up behind closed doors by Nancy Pelosi, and other liberal Democrats, with zero Republican input. It was three times larger than the entire New Deal of the Great Depression, even adjusted for inflation. Now, that bill is in the Senate, and thankfully it has no chance of passing that chamber and becoming law.
(One of the many reasons I voted against this bill is that I felt we needed to see if the stimulus bills we had already passed were having an impact. I didn't feel there was any justification for spending a whopping $3 trillion more before we had some economic numbers. We now have those numbers and it's clear those early stimulus bills are having a big impact.)
Senate Majority Leader McConnell has said that a fourth and final stimulus is likely to be voted on in the month of July, and it will get rid of many outrageous items that were included in the House bill. It's reported that the Senate will focus on boosting jobs, providing relief to schools, and providing relief to small businesses. And it won't cost taxpayers $3 trillion! This is great news, and when more information is made public about this legislation in the Senate, I will keep you updated.
Proxy Voting Scam
As I have said before and will continue to say, proxy voting has no place in the halls of Congress. I voted against this measure when the Democrats brought it to the floor, and I have now signed onto a lawsuit against this total breach of the Constitution. Members of Congress are elected to represent their constituents in Washington, not stay at home and phone in important votes from their couches. When Republicans regain the majority in Congress, repealing this illegitimate procedure will be priority number one.
Remembering Pat Dye
If there was a college football version of Mount Rushmore, Pat Dye could be there among the greats. Not only did he bring Auburn football back into prominence by winning games, SEC Championships, and what probably should have been a 1983 National Championship, he was a wonderful molder of young men. While he will long be remembered for the games he won and the contributions he made to the great Auburn-Alabama rivalry, there are hundreds of people who were touched by him who will carry on his legacy for decades to come.
D-Day, 76 Years Later
On June 5th, 1944 General Dwight D. Eisenhower told his troops, "You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you…I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory! Good luck! And let us all beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking."
These words from General Eisenhower came shortly after he gave the order to storm the beaches of Normandy at dawn of the next day. That order, that risky invasion, and those brave men who executed it changed the course of history and turned the tide of the war. As we remember the heroic actions of June 6th, 1944, we should also remember the 4,000+ men who gave the ultimate sacrifice that day for all of us to live in freedom. They are this nation's Greatest Generation, and we will forever be indebted to their service.
Sincerely,
|
