Voting ends on April 1 for the extremely important Wisconsin Supreme Court election. The outcome of the race between Judge Susan Crawford and Judge Brad Schimel to fill an open seat on the Court, will determine whether the court retains its liberal majority – or shifts to right wing control. The results of the race will impact the outcome of a number of pending cases before the Court, including on Wisconsin voting rules, redistricting, labor rights, and abortion rights.
A key case pending before the Court involves an 1849 law banning abortion that has no exceptions for rape or incest. Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Jill Karofsky calls it a “death warrant” for Wisconsin women and girls. Judge Susan Crawford SUPPORTS women’s access to abortion and reproductive health care, while her opponent, Brad Schimel wants to criminalize abortion, and says that the 1849 law banning abortion is valid.
