John: On Tuesday Wisconsin voters will decide between progressive Dane County Circuit Court Judge Susan Crawford and conservative former Attorney General Brad Schimel in a race that will determine the ideological balance of the court.
Why is this election important? Wisconsin's Supreme Court elections are nonpartisan, but the ideological balance of the court has widespread ramifications for voting rights, civil rights, and a slew of other state policy implications. State Supreme Courts like this one are also often the final arbiters of election disputes, as we saw in both the 2020 and 2022 elections.
In 2023 progressive judge Janet Protasiewicz won a similar race and flipped the balance of the Wisconsin Supreme Court, giving the state a 4-3 pro-voting rights majority. The outcome of this year's election will determine whether Wisconsin holds that liberal majority moving forward or if the court slides back to the suppressive policies of Wisconsin's past.
