I spent ten years teaching English rhetoric and critical thinking, and I’ve been thinking about how the Trump Administration uses rhetoric to mislead the public.

Here’s an example: Remember how the Trump Administration got its start? By purging the federal workforce of longtime public servants to replace them with loyalists he claims have “merit”?

Now we know that some of our most senior “merited” officials — including the Vice President, the Defense Secretary, and the Secretary of State accidentally texted war plans to a journalist in an unsecured group chat. In any merit-based workplace, individuals responsible for this level of security breach would be fired. Here’s the rhetoric lesson: in the Trump Administration, “merit” is Orwellian doublespeak for “loyalty.” It’s chilling, it’s dangerous, it’s CORRUPT. And it’s unacceptable.
