Dear Friends-

It’s been one year since the release of our campaign video ([link removed]) and all of the hard work, countless hours canvassing, rallying, calling, mailing and non-stop spreading the word about the IDC and the need for a Democratic Majority in the NY State Senate. All of our efforts resulted in concrete changes in the lives of all New Yorkers. I could not be prouder of what my colleagues and I have accomplished since then.

On August 14th, 2019, the Child Victims Act went into effect beginning a one year grace period for any adult survivor of childhood sexual abuse to bring forward a claim in court against their abuser. I was honored to participate in a Public Service Announcement ([link removed]) to raise awareness so that victims have the opportunity to seek justice. Safe Horizon has compiled resources ([link removed]) for anyone who would like more information on this legislation. The NY Times also profiled our stories ([link removed]) today and my hope in sharing my story, is that victims will break their silence and feel safe coming forward.

Also last week my bill, enacting sweeping changes in laws targeting workplace harassment and discrimination ([link removed]) , was signed by the Governor. Now employers across all sectors will be held accountable for addressing all forms of sexual harassment and discrimination in the workplace, and survivors will be given the necessary time to report complaints and seek the justice they deserve

Back on July 10, 2019, the legislation I proposed amending New York’s Equal Pay Law ([link removed]) was signed into law. The primary purpose of the legislation is to expand equal pay protections, prohibit pay differentials for “substantially similar” work, and protect against the potential adverse effects of disclosing salary history to employers. This makes New York the most recent state to join in efforts to eradicate pay discrimination, not only on the basis of sex, but all protected categories under New York State’s Human Rights Law (NYSHRL).

On Sunday, August 25th I am hosting an End of Summer Celebration in Loreto Park from 1-4pm featuring live music and activities. Please reply to this email if you would like more information. I hope you can join us!

With Gratitude,
Alessandra
